Iowa Football Position Preview: Looking at Special Teams

Good stuff. I enjoyed this analysis because I had forgotten a lot of the details about how successful we were in this phase of the game. Good coaching was obvious.

I wasn’t able to get the link to work but I agree we should have a strong special teams group.

I would not be surprised to see Duncan have a down year however, or a reversion to the mean. There have been many instances is kickers putting it together for one year but then falling way off after that.

Punt returning was the one issue last year. I really would love to put Tyrone Tracy back there, but he must not be sure handed enough for the coaches liking yet.

I also think of teams are going to start kicking away from ISM, there are some things we could do in that regard as well. Maybe put a guy like Tracy as an up man if teams are kicking it short all the time. We will gladly take the great field position though.

I feel like our (field goal) kicking game has always been above average under KF. Actually feel like most out special teams have been above average, EXCEPT maybe punting
Agree. I wonder how much our bad punting has had an effect on our punt coverage but we've been solid at that. But those two things go hand in hand. Would you rather have no return on a 34 yard punt or a 15 yard return on a 65 yard one?.... Math haha

I think PR would be a prime role for Charlie Jones. He returned kicks for Buffalo as a RSFR in 2018.

Not a bad thought. Doesn’t look like there will be many reps at WR for him so would be a chance to carve out a role. McKinney who was mentioned in the article is intriguing as well. King and Hyde were two DBs that excelled in that role.

I think Terry Roberts is also pretty electric with the ball in his hands.

We are going to be leaning pretty heavily on ISM in a lot of different ways, but if he can demonstrate sure enough hands to be PR, that would be huge. Even the threat of him back there would force teams to try to kick away, which would benefit field position.
