Iowa Football Notebook: Healing Going Slowly for Hawkeyes

I kind of suspected that they would sideline most of the guys with leg & knee injuries this week. Not only is it not worth the risk, it is an opportunity to give it a full two week recovery. Than perhaps get some of them back in practice the week before the Michigan game.

Good to hear Alaric Jackson is making solid progress on rehabing the knee injury. Those things are scary. Some times the full extent of the injury isn't known the first week, until the swelling goes down.

I was a little surprised Merriweather remains sidelined after Parker said last week he was back working and the Kaevon posted on IG that he was back at practice.

Oh well, heal up everyone for trip to Ann Arbor.

Any chance they're just holding him out for that very reason?

MTSU really isn't very good, so if we can rest all of our hurt guys for what will be our next big measuring stick, that'd be a huge plus.

Perhaps in a few cases. I don't think AJ and Brents are ready. Moss is a ways off. Hankins as a hamstring, and those are tricky.

Might have something to do with the competition being close between Koerner and Merriweather. Koerner gets the benifit of multiple consecutive starts while they are being a bit guarded about Merriweather's return.

It will be interesting to see how that competition at FS plays out and if Merriweather maybe gets a look at Cash upon his return.

I kind of thought of him as a Cash from the start. He spent a lot of time around the LOS from his HS highlights, and he is super physical and athletic.

Koerner is going to be the guy at FS. Feel kind of bad for Merriweather that an injury is going to cost him the spot he won out of camp, but PP did talk about it that battle being close.

I’m most confused about the Brents thing. What is the injury? Seems like it’s been almost radio silence. All we heard is he’s injured and he’s out a couple weeks after he wasn’t suited week one. Maybe the coaches are now thinking redshirt him this season? At this point it would be hard to imagine a scenario where they put him out there for his first action of the year at the Big House.

Hopefully DJ Johnson makes some big strides this week because with Hankins and Brents still up in the air, that trip to Michigan is looking more questionable by the second. Michigan has good talent on the outside and they want to play spread this year.

Parker was asked about Brents and Moss red shirting last week...

Q. With he (Brents) and Moss -- since they have been out for a while -- is it possible to turn into a redshirt year, keeping it under four games?

PHIL PARKER: That's definitely a possibility, but the way I try to do it, hey, let's get back and start playing and help us win and you're going to start playing. We can't think about, hey, is this a possible redshirt, or, you know -- it will come up if they don't get back fast enough.
