Iowa Football Notebook: Gameplan, Injury Update, LaPorta

Is it just me or is it weird we are giving away our game plan? Hey Wisconsin we are going to bring and extra safety into the box to try and stop the run just so you are aware. Hey Wisconsin if you go trips we are going to bring out Dane Belton and play our 4-2-5.

Okay I’m making it seem like a bigger deal than it is, those are typical of how most teams play defense against Wisconsin.

Hopefully we have added new wrinkles to our gameplan because although those teams had some success you can bet Wisconsin is making adjustments and working on things in their bye week as well.

I am more worried about the offensive line dealing with the 3-4. The line has been confused a lot this year. I am hoping Brian gets creative, and by that I mean a bit old school. Go more under center and play action to not force the line and Nate to have to think as much. Shot gun passing sets mean that anyone of 9-10 guys could be coming on any snap and the entire field must be read correctly.

Harder to get exotic blitzes off of Power I play action passes, and hopefully it also gives Nate more limited and quick reads down the field so he releases the DAMN BALL. That is what I would do here.

That was my thought at first as well.
In the end everyone knows Wisconsin is going to line up and run the ball. It's just that few have been able to stop it. People have stacked the box before, but it didn't work. If that's all there was to it, I think lots of teams would have been doing it.
I think it was more of a respect thing. Saying that they have a potent run game that must be accounted for in prep as well as game time.

And Iowa has had winning streaks against wisky. It is still a rivalry because of border states and how long they have been playing.

The last streak of any consequence was 15 years ago. Since 2006 Iowa has only won 3 games against Wisconsin.

Maybe it's a smoke screen.

I see your hangover wore off finally.

Here are some interesting facts.

Iowa has not allowed a run over 20 yards yet this season.

Jonathan Taylor has never scored a touchdown vs. Iowa

The visitor in this series is 7-1 straight up.

Jack Coan has not passed for more than 200 yds. in a conference game.

Just something to chew on.

Iowa represents only 2 of those 7 wins though. A majority of those 7 are a result of Wisconsin dominating the series over the last decade and the quirks of conference expansion giving Iowa home games in 5 of the last 7 meetings.

Always those damn pesky facts getting in the way of a good narrative....
