Iowa City Construction Update

There is a bit of construction in the area so here is a quick update for those coming from out of town.

1st Avenue Coralville (Hayden Fry Way). They are re-building the bridge over Clear Creek so 1st Avenue is down to one lane in each direction from just past Iowa River Power across Clear Creek to Highway 6. Construction is anticipated to continue through the season so probably a good route to avoid.

1st Ave to 1st Ave - Google Maps

I also noticed this morning that they are rebuilding the sidewalk and part of the roadway on Melrose, from just west of the stadium (just across the railroad bridge) continuing to near Sunset. From the looks of things, I suspect that will be finished prior to the home opener, but lots of mud right now and cones down the street. Hopefully that will all be cleared up prior to 09/04.

You gotta be kidding me. You couldn't pick a much worse place to do this as football season opens. I sometimes wonder how much they drink at the DOT.

Agreed. It's manageable for the most part today, but on game days, it's going to be a nightmare for anyone who takes that route.

It had to be done. Stuff was in bad shape, flood made things worse. Melrose work will be done for sure.

A nightmare on gameday???? It's a nightmare already no matter what time of day you or on it.

I don't disagree that it had to be done but what I don't understand is why they didn't start earlier in the Spring. I feel bad for the out of towners that have no idea what they will be getting themselves into on the 1st home game, I bet there will be cars backed up to the interstate if not onto the interstate.

Thanks for the update, Hawkeye101.

The construction on 1st Ave. is going to be an absolute headache if construction will in fact continue through the season.

I would agree with everyone else that construction should have started in April/May (unless it did start at that time) to avoid the problem.

Go Hawks!

1st Ave is going to be torn up throughout the football season, and probably Basketball season too. Only good way to comin from Cedar Rapids/ west is on Melrose or past mall.

Avoid Exit 242 1st Ave Hayden Fry way.

but they so stupid, i work caseyhs and i know they should have dun it some other time. MORRONS.

Giving you the benefit of a doubt on this one. Otherwise, it is just too depressing.

My suggestion would be to just close that off-ramp for games this season.

Speaking as an IC resident, there is no way in hell I'd get caught on 1st avenue come gameday with the bridge traffic. It's probably going to make the intersection by the softball diamond a nightmare. It sucks but they are also going to raise the CRANDIC railway to improve the levee that failed in the '08 floods...those of us that lived & sandbagged through that mess can appreciate those improvements, assuming we don't get the 1000 yr flood next year.

I'd come in the last southern IC exit, up HWY 1 past the airport, and poof that's the fastest way in if there are traffic problems. You can get to the Law lots, finkbine lots, etc. very quick that way with the only traffic being on riverside as you get close to burlington.

As for me, a bike is ALWAYS easy in easy out.
