Iowa 13th in BCS

Iowatailgate, to say Wisconsin would not bring as many fans to a BCS Bowl game as Iowa is ridiculous. Wisconsin hasn't been to a BCS Bowl game since the 2000 Rose Bowl 11 years ago and sells out an 80,000 seat stadium every week. I love Iowa, but to say Wisconsin would not bring as many fans (and I think they would bring more) is ludicrous.

Wisconsin has 3 home games this season that they didn't sell out.

You can currently buy tickets to their final 2 home games on their website as I type this.
That takes care of "....sells out an 80,000 seat stadium every week"

I'm not comparing Wisconsin to Indiana fans.
You guys make it sound like the BCS bowls HAVE to select a team if they are ranked ahead of others. It's simply not the case.

Actually the Indiana game is sold out. You can only get tickets on the marketplace. Also, tickets available for the Northwestern game are high in the end zone so that game will probably be sold out shortly. I'm not saying a BCS Bowl has to select a better ranked team, but Wisconsin would have a better record, a win at Iowa, a better BCS ranking and will travel at least as well as Iowa. I just don't see how the Bowl would justify taking Iowa over Wisconsin. Remember that Iowa's win over PSU was directly cited by the Orange Bowl.

The bowls don't have to justify their selections...but they will spin it to fit their preferences...so this isn't a major issue. Iowa (10-2) could get the Sugar over Wisconsin (11-1). Ohio State (10-2) could get the Sugar over Iowa (10-2). Michigan State has moved on to basketball now...don't travel well at all. They are out of the BCS picture unless they get the Rose IMO...even at 11-1. If Iowa goes 10-2 I think there is a very good chance they will be in a BCS game.

Take a look at their non conference schedule:
UNLV(1-8)
San Jose State(1-8)
Arizona State(4-5)
Austin Peay(2-7)

Sure, Iowa played 2 cupcakes too (E. Illinois and Ball State).
If the road to a BCS bowl is determined by record only, then Iowa is better off to never schedule a tough non-conference game (example: our loss to Arizona)

Wisconsin will have 2 nice wins. Iowa and OSU.

Iowa will have 3 nice wins: PSU(ranked at the time), OSU and MSU(a team Wisconsin lost to).

My point is that Iowa has had a much more difficult schedule and will be co-big 10 champs with Wisconsin.

But hey, everyone is entitled to their opinion and that's the beauty of a message board. I see Iowa being picked over UW or MSU

Iowatailgate, I'm not saying there aren't metrics that can be used to convince someone that Iowa is the better team. I personally think Iowa is the better team, but the basic metrics (head-to-head, overall record, BCS Rankings) all favor Wisconsin. Also, the traveling argument doesn't hold a ton of weight since Wisconsin is considered a great traveling team and they haven't been to a BCS Bowl game in 11 years.

I just cannot see a bowl representative coming out at a press conference and saying they picked Iowa over Wisconsin because they had a tougher non-conference schedule and more quality victories. I am even more convinced of the factors I mentioned since the Orange Bowl reps specifically said they picked Iowa over PSU last year because of a head-to-head victory and better BCS ranking.

A lot has to do with the matchups, too. If it comes down to LSU vs either Iowa/UW for the final spot, they're not going to want another Iowa/LSU matchup.
There are so many factors that will determine everything. Of course, we're both assuming Iowa/MSU/UW all win out. The chances of that happening are probably not the greatest.

Also, when the committee explains why they select a certain team, they always come up with some sort of BS answer. I wouldn't believe too much of what they say. When it's all said and done, money talks and that's why they select a certain team.

Here is a great article talking about why TCU or Boise State will be left out of the BCS bowls.

That is definitely worth a read, and Dodd is right. The Sugar has taken Utah, Hawaii and Cincy for the last three years, they're done with mid-majors and are going to go Big Ten at the first chance. The Orange is not going to have a Va Tech Boise St. re-match especially when they struggle getting people in the seats and TV ratings to begin with.

You're right, SR, they won't. They'll take 50k.
OSU fans travel like no other.
Don't get me wrong, Hawk fans are legit and fosu fans don't bathe regularly, but...the ugly little tree-nuts travel in sick huge droves.

**Correction to this**

OSU fans travel like no other...TO A BCS GAME

However, if tOSU gets left out of the BCS picture, which I think they will after we beat them, they will go to the CapOne at which point they won't bring many butts to fill the seats with them.

Iowa souldnt be vying vs. Wiconsin for an At-Large. Wisconsin would win a 3 way tie with the higher BCS ranking and go to the Rose. So we would be fighting with MSU as well as others.

Iowa wouldnt be going up against Wiconsin for an At-Large. Wisconsin would win a 3 way tie with the higher BCS ranking and go to the Rose. So we would be fighting with MSU as well as others.

Iowa 13th
MSU 11th

We win out, we're in a BCS bowl. A win over OSU late in the year will provide a nice jump in the rankings.

And if Wisconsin loses, that will be nice, too :)

Wrong, a Wisconsin loss is NECESSARY. If Iowa, Wisky and MSU win out Iowa will probably not go to a BCS bowl. This is why. Iowa will be eliminated from tie breaking policy due to its worse win loss record (10-2 v. 11-1) Then it will be head to head MSU v. Wisky. MSU wins that and goes to the Rose bowl. Now the BCS has to pick between Iowa and Wisky, and not to forget OSU who is probably 10-2 as well. They will most likely pick Wisky who has a better overall record than Iowa, and beat Iowa head to head.

Iowa needs Wisky to LOSE.

If MSU, Iowa, and Wisky all win out, we would get eliminated right away because we have a 10-2 record, while Wisky and MSU both would have 11-1 records. Then they go to H2H, meaning MSU would get the Rose Bowl, and we'd be jockeying with Wisky for an at-large.

Nope. The only way the "BCS ranking" criteria would be used is if we have 3 losses, thus putting us out of the at-large picture entirely. If IA, WI & MSU all win out, we most certainly would be up against WI for the at-large...and we would lose out on that deal.

Iowa exposed MSU. MSU used trick plays to beat a bad Notre Dame team and a so-so NW team. I'm quite confident the improving Penn State team will beat MSU on senior day at PSU. Their only hope for the BCS is the Rose Bowl IMO.
