I just tallied the 3 point shot attempts and makes from the box scores from Iowa's 7 losses.
Iowa made 31 of 107 for 29.0%. 93 points made in threes.
Opponents made 63 of 173 for 36.7%. 189 points made in threes.
Iowa's average margin of loss in all 7 losses was 4.85 per game.
The opponents' average margin in points from successful 3 shots was 13.71 per game, almost 9 more than the margin of victory.
Conclusions:
1. Clearly, the difference in all losses was the 3 point shooting.
2. Even though opponents averaged about the national avg in 3 point shooting, they attempted almost ten more 3 pointers per game than Iowa. In the lone game in which Iowa shot more 3's than the opponent, they hit 15% of them and were outscored in 3-point shots by 12 points (and lost by 2). In the game in which they shot the same number of threes, they were outscored by 6 points in threes (and lost the game by 3).
3. Apparently, the perimiter defense by the opponents was much better than Iowa's, but Iowa did not do a terrible
job in defending the three, except for the game at Madision and the game against Sparty in Iowa City.
So does Iowa need to start shooting more threes? Are they looking too much for open looks from beyond the line?
I think Gesell, Ogelsby, and Uthoff have passed up a bunch of good looks this year from beyond the arc.
