Interesting trend in Iowa's 7 losses

I just tallied the 3 point shot attempts and makes from the box scores from Iowa's 7 losses.

Iowa made 31 of 107 for 29.0%. 93 points made in threes.
Opponents made 63 of 173 for 36.7%. 189 points made in threes.

Iowa's average margin of loss in all 7 losses was 4.85 per game.

The opponents' average margin in points from successful 3 shots was 13.71 per game, almost 9 more than the margin of victory.

Conclusions:

1. Clearly, the difference in all losses was the 3 point shooting.

2. Even though opponents averaged about the national avg in 3 point shooting, they attempted almost ten more 3 pointers per game than Iowa. In the lone game in which Iowa shot more 3's than the opponent, they hit 15% of them and were outscored in 3-point shots by 12 points (and lost by 2). In the game in which they shot the same number of threes, they were outscored by 6 points in threes (and lost the game by 3).

3. Apparently, the perimiter defense by the opponents was much better than Iowa's, but Iowa did not do a terrible
job in defending the three, except for the game at Madision and the game against Sparty in Iowa City.

So does Iowa need to start shooting more threes? Are they looking too much for open looks from beyond the line?

I think Gesell, Ogelsby, and Uthoff have passed up a bunch of good looks this year from beyond the arc.

Interesting.....I certainly know White passes up 3s and did so again today. Sometimes we seem to rush them and not run enough offense to set up for a shot, other times we are open and clank them, and then we sometimes pass them up.

Like a lot of things on this team, it is finishing and being decisive. Maybe more so the problem is we don't have a true identity.......the media thought of Iowa as something (final 4s)......the fans thought of Iowa as something (also thinking big).....but the team is performing like a 10-8 or a 5-8 seed in the tourney when we look at the over all body of work. We are like a good but no great, cobbled together dry wall job.

I've been saying this all year long. It's been this way consistently.

I've been saying this all year long.. it always goes down like this.

7 losses have shown us that teams that are even mediocre on defense can shut us down for long stretches. They beg us to shoot long shots, and we clank away while the game gets away. This is how you beat us, the blueprint is clear. Good teams don't have such massive glaring weaknesses. Home losses suck, I'm bitter about this year.

In a similar thread that I started earlier this year I provided the non con stats and despite out scoring our opponents by like 20, we were still getting doubled in 3 pt production.

It's amazing how bad we are and I think we have to look directly at White playing the 3 spot. Is there any other team in the nation that has a 3 who is absolutely no threat from behind the arc?

I said it in another thread but in comparison today, Wisconsin had 5 guys that can make 3s in their starting lineup, we have 2.
