Interesting Thoughts on Next Year

With the NCAA basically making this a non-year as far as eligibility is concerned, how many of Iowa players actually leave for the NFL.

In my estimation, there are really only three that may leave...Jackson, Nixon, & Golston.

Golston may be on the fence too. He's having a really good year...and his stats don't really show the impact he's had. He's put a ton of pressure on the QB, but doesn't have the sack totals to show for it. He also has to lead the B10 in holding calls that haven't been called. He gets held more than any player on our front.

I could see Smith, Smith-Marsette, Cronk, and Heflin all staying. Linderbaum, could leave too, I believe, but my guess is that he stays one more year.

Either way you look at it, you would have a great nucleus of players returning next year...especially in the OL and DL. If Colbert returns at LB, you also have a ton of LBs and DBs returning.

Thoughts?

Kids are funny. 4 years in 1 place can start to make 22 year olds feel restless. For somebody like ISM who has been playing since he was a true freshman, maybe he might be ready to move on. But I have no idea. It's a personal choice for each player. Sometimes it comes down to money, or maybe a desire to graduate, or sometimes it's all about a girl.

If everyone came back and we have solid QB play, this is a top 10 ball club next year. They ain't as good as Bama or Clemson, but they're a formidable contender for the conference title because OSU will get gutted again.

As for next year we know, Iowa will have a good QB with a year under his belt. Good running backs. Couple of decent WRs. And offensive line that may lack a star since Jackson will most likely leave.

Defensively, Iowa should be fine. Defensive line is a concern. Not the starting 3 or 4 but having enough for a rotation.

It's tough to pass up a big paycheck for something you've been basically doing for pennies. Especially if your expected to go in the first 3 rounds. The journeyman players still looking for more film time need to stay, but as someone mentioned, these are 22 year olds and another year is a lifetime to them. ISM and Smith are good WRs but they haven't had that season that sets them apart nationally. Jackson he'll get a big paycheck. It's just depends how tired they are of school and how much money factors into their thinking.

ISM and Brandon Smith will both test well at the combine/pro day and have more than enough film to go off. Not sure either one gets drafted, but they will have a good chance to make a practice squad at a minimum. I would be shocked if either one stayed.

Linderbaum should go, but I am guessing it will be a tough choice for the Iowa native.

Jackson, Nixon, and Golston likely will all be gone and should get drafted. I think Hankins probably leaves too - has a draft profile similar to OJ.

I could see Colbert leaving as a grad transfer.

The interesting choices are for: Niemann, Wade, Banwart, Cronk, Heflin, Schulte, VanValkenburg, Duncan (doesn't have the leg strength needed for the NFL), and Beyer.

I could actually see our punter, Taylor, leaving. Huge leg and the ability to drop it seemingly wherever he wants. He is 23 years old and eligible. I sure hope he stays though.

The NFL takes like at most 3 punters a year, though. That has to be the position with the least amount of turnover. I think he'll need more than 9 games of film.

You are probably right about that, it is a difficult position to break in to. He certainly seems to have what it takes though. I really don't think he'll leave but it is a possibility.

Barring injury, Nixon, Gholston and Jackson are gone for sure. Smith is likely gone also. ISM has some damage control to do and he needs more production what he already has on tape isn’t enough.

None of this matters if you don’t get better quarterback play from Petras .
