Interesting Bobby Hanson comment during wisky game

During a break or a slow moment Hanson was saying (paraphrasing some) "Wisconsin players are good at getting their arms up to disrupt shooters but they keep them back because they also get a lot of body on the shooter, sort of get under the shooter to throw them off....."

When he said that the first thing that popped into my head was "well all this contact are fouls" WTF .

contact is contact and should be a foul....Wisconsin is very deceptive at that, coached that way, and as long as they can get away w/it, it fits their game.....What's the one thing when someone is under the basket going up for a shot and there's a foul? The ref will usually motion that their hands/arms are going forward into the player.....very seldom does a Wisconsin player get called for that.....

Nigel Hayes is outstanding at bulldozing into his man to draw a foul. Kaminsky can throw his hands up at the ref as if this is the nba, yet no tech or even warning. I don’t blame Woody for going all optometrist on their a**es.

Fran was about to explode on the one play where Hayes just lowered his shoulder and pushed the hawk player back and the hawk got the foul called on them.

Terrible officiating.

Even at that the first half shooting woes by IOwa about 20% is what led to the crushing defeat.

Wiscy and MSU get away with that brand of thuggery all the time. Yezh ,drop the shoulder and back yur defender, score and draw the fould.WTF..The way that Wiscy shot the ball it wouldn't make any difference. We couldn't even hit our FTs.

How about the charging calls? There were a couple that there was NO friggin way the
BadCheezerHead player was in position, set ........still the Badjerk refs made the call against
IOWA. Cannot wait to get some Home cooking on Bozo Ryan, next Saturday.

Calling all Hawkeye fans.........get ready to be LOUD next Saturday, in Iowa City

Was Hansen or is any other poster saying Iowa was called for fouls that Wisconsin wasn't? Are you accusing refs of being dishonest or just allowing physical play (implies physical play for both teams)?

If the refs were allowing physical play during the Wisky game then, unfortunately, you'd have to say the Hawkeyes aren't good shooters, can't play defense, aren't athletic, and aren't physical.

I remember how irate I'd get watching both Ted Kichel and Randy Wittman (Indiana early 80's)lean in on every jump shot and go to the line constantly....drove me nuts how they got EVERY call....never charging.

Not necessarily a foul if the guy isn't directly underneath him but "skootches" up after he's up in the air, it certainly can be uncomfortable for the shooter and throw off his rhythm. Bobby was a master of this on defense in the NBA and stuck Jordan better than anyone before he joined the Bulls. MJ can attest to that. He loved Bobby and large part of the reason he got to Chicago.

OMG.

We lost, let's move on and hope we get the next one in Carver. The refs didn't cheat us, not one bit. Wisconsin is a VERY fundamentally sound team. They don't reach, clutch, grab or eye poke which is why they don't get called for many fouls. Almost every year that's consistent.

just take the loss, file it away and try to be better next time

Separate the loss from the issue.

Iowa was just outplayed, period. No excuses.

Wisconsin is still the dirtiest team in the BigTen. They get away with more pulling, tugging, pushing, shovin, holding than any club I can recall watching.

I have to disagree with you, there, Hawkdrummer. Sparty is clearly dirtier than any other team and it isn't really close. IHMO

That's pretty much the exact opposite of what they do. They don't go for steals, they don't press, they don't extend their defense and they typically don't go for blocks. When you do those things you don't typically foul much. That's basic basketball principles.

Iowa State is another team that does this type of stuff. It's pretty widespread in college ball. That's not the reason that we lost to Wisconsin but it contributed to it. We need to learn how to deal with it or start playing that way ourselves. A couple of other things, the blocking/charge calls need to be called more accurately. Right now I'd say blocking gets called 98% of the time. The last one is fouls on blocked shots. If a player blocks a shot from the front and gets body on the shooter a foul is called. I seems like every time a shot is blocked from behind the body contact is ignored. Just my two cents.

Wish we were coached and we played the kind of defense Bo Ryan coaches. Might not of won this game but it would've been a hell of a lot more competitive.
