Inside the coach's mind....

I find it interesting to hear the two coaches in the postgame...on that last play by Sims in regulation:

Beilein:'' we figured they would sit on our 3 point shooters and so we figured Sims should be the one we have shoot the ball, so we ran a play for him..''.

Lick: '' I was surprised they went for three on that play''

Then in the final play in OT with Iowa down 3 ...Beilein obviously figured Iowa would go for three so they stayed at home on the shooters when Gatens drove...while lick either had Gatens go for two, or drive and look to kick to someone on the perimeter, but really I doubt he wanted Matt to kick it out, because Matt is our best three pointer so if he really wanted that he would have had May or Payne drive and kick to Matt..

Bottom line, it is clear that Beilein is a gambler down 3 and assumed lick would guard it that way, while Lick is not a gambler and assumed Beilein was not either...then when lick is down 3, beilein assumed lick was a gambler and guarded that way, while lick is not a gambler and went for the 2.

These two both play a somewhat similar style of drive and kick, and lots of three pointers but are still not of the same mind on last second scenarios.

I figured Michigan was going to go for three at the end of regulation, what surprised me was the fact that they ran a play for Sims.

I was totally shocked that Iowa did not go for the three in OT. In my opinion once they did not get the ball up the court and into Gaten's hands fast enough they should have called a TO (did they have one?), and set up a play to get a shooter open.

If Cully brings the ball up the court real fast and catches the defense too far extended and back on their heels he can take it to the hoop quick and score. Maybe the fear was that Cully really struggled to finish when he was getting to the basket so they feared that Sims could block his shot.

I wouldn't assume that what a coach says in the postgame is always what he was really thinking. I believe often a coach says something to protect his players.

I was shocked that Michigan didn't foul at the end of OT...

I thought they would foul for sure in fear that there could have been a repeat from what happenned at the end of regulation.

everyone in watching the game knew they would go for 3. You mean to tell me lick didn't think they would? that explains our record. Also, in OT with us down 3, i was very surprised to see we didn't go for a 3 shot? These comments by these coaches, explains our records. The difference between alford and lick, is that these close wins that iowa should have had and lost, is that alford would have run plays to make sure iowa would win. there was a time in alfords first half of his carreer at iowa, that he too would lose games that they were leading late. he learned to coach with a lead finally. Lick has to learn how to coach with a lead. For whatever reason, they play to not lose, not to win.

For what it's worth, I believe Gatens may have made his own decision to drive hard to the lane in hopes of making a layup and getting fouled after missing a 3pt shot from almost the identical spot just a minute or so earlier. I only wish I could have caught the look on Coach Lick's face immediately following the play with my camera as he and Gatens definitely exchanged eye contact but it happened too fast for me to read the non-verbal so perhaps someone can replay on DVR and share their thoughts. If so, the eye exchange happened as Gatens was roughly at the free throw line headed back to play defense as I recall when he looked over at Coach.

I didn't know if they would go for a 3 or go for 2 and foul to extend the game. I guess some of you need to be on the bench helping Lick out with these situations. I believe Sims is somewhere in the 30% tile for 3 point shooting for the year. So if your telling me that Sims is gong to hit a 3 I would say good luck. It was a hell of a shot, you all would be crying if there was a pure 3 point shooter open and he hit the shot to. So your damned if you do and your damned if you don't, it's not as easy as it looks people.

JoeHawki, are you being serious about SA? He cost us his fair amount of games to. It's pretty easy to be a coach like you are doing after the fact. I'm sure the players are trying like hell to lose a game to, give me a break.
