"Incarnate Word has earned an at-large bid to the FCS playoffs. It will be play on Nov. 24. If the Cardinals win, the Dec. 1 game at Iowa State will be canceled. If they lose, IW has said it will come to Ames."

They play at Montana St

I really hope they win that Nov 24th game!! Would be damn funny to see isu get dumped.

Northern Iowa made the playoff's, the host Lamar next Saturday

Article in the register said they have other teams already lined up in case IW wins this weekend.
Kind of a crazy turn of events, a team that won 3 games the last 2 years goes on a run and makes the playoffs to spoil ISU make up game

Won't IW make way more money playing ISU than continuing in some meaningless playoff games? Can Iowa State play UW Stevens Point if Incarnate Word has to cancel? That would be an interesting game.

I dont really understand it. Why not just cancel that last game? Iowa State is already bowl eligible anyway, and its not like beating down a cupcake is going to improve your resume at all.

I could understand keeping that last game if it meant getting to 6 wins and bowl eligible....but you're already there. So that last game makes zero sense to play.

Yup and they will need it for the next great coaching hire that will leave them promptly. It is getting expensive to be a trampoline school. No matter what happens to Ferentz I pray Iowa doesn't see this fate in my lifetime.

UW Whitewater would be an interesting game. Warhawks have got some swag.

Don't they have to pay IW a pretty decent amount for that game though? Will they really draw enough fans to a meaningless game in what will likely be cold weather to make up enough after the 500K or whatever they have to pay IW?

Can they just play Drake now instead? I thought the key issue was that Drake would not count for bowl eligibility but ISU already has a bowl locked up. So why not just play Drake? Or was there another reason they could not play Drake?

I feel like I read that the NCAA said no since Drake is D3 or whatever they call it now.

I don't think the game is even televised though...maybe on cycloneTV or whatever? Also they probably have to pay IW like half a mill to travel and play in this game.

Seems to me like they'll lose money chasing a meaningless win

I don't know the economics well enough to say for sure. I would imagine the game has to profit some though for them to pursue it as they have. I guess it could just be not to piss off the season ticket holders, but I'm skeptical that would be a determining factor.

I think they just wanted a 12th game to avoid issuing ticket refunds and in case they needed that 6th win for bowl eligibility. Not many other reasons make sense.

I don't think they have any obligation to refund tickets do they? The game kicked off & was cancelled by weather. I don't know either way, but it doesn't seem logical that they would be on the hook for refunds.

You might be right. I just know on social media people were asking about refunds and all that. So they probably didn't have an obligation to issue refunds but wanted to avoid the bad PR.

I have an old Sony handheld they can use to televise the game, assuming they can find a power cord. I lost mine.

Is it an old school standard Sony removable power cord with the rounded ends? If so I hav3 like 32 of those in my basement with nothing to plug them into. I have no idea how I ended up with so many.

I would imagine gate receipts, which are a huge part of the athletic budget at any school, are the driving factor. I have no idea how much a Cyclone ticket is or how many fans are expected to go but a 50,000 seat stadium selling tickets at 50 dollars each is going to be 2.5 million just for the gate, let alone concessions etc.

And can't forget about local businesses. Ames and Iowa City are basically small towns that depend on major universities to support them. They only get 7 home games each year, they need these games badly. So they have a stake in this too.

Well the gate receipts are going to be negligible since anyone who held a ticket for the South Dakota State game that was cancelled in the 1st quarter gets in for free. So they already made most of the ticket revenue

Fans who purchased tickets to the South Dakota State game (single game or season tickets) will receive tickets to the UIW contest on Dec. 1.
