If you win the tip, half the time it gives you an extra possession per game, the other half of the time it does not. If the average point-per-possession is about 1.0, the winning the tip is worth 0.5 points. There is value to winning it!

I used to love the old rule of doing a jump ball on every tie up. I thought it added to the game, sort of like hockey.

They should change the rule to not allow the jumpers to touch the ball until its coming down. As is, its a quickness contest, not a jumping contest. Its who jumps quickly enough to tip it while its still going up. Shockingly, our two vertically challenged centers are not very adept at the quick jump.

Back in my high school days, when every tie up was jumped, I actually practiced from time to time attempting to tip the ball into the basket when jumping from the near free throw circle. I never did attempt this during a game.
