Do I (like anyone) know what is going to happen this Fall? Of course not. And yes, I know that, prior to the last few years there was no such thing as "the wave". But now that it is in place, it is unthinkable to me to envision the stands at Kinnick to be anything less than jammed full of fans at the end of the 1st quarter of each home game wishing the best to some young people who need all the support they can get.
I don't know what could be put together as an alternative. I only know that, if I want a reason to get things back to normal as soon as possible, I only need to look at that wing of University Hospitals, on that top floor, and watch tapes from previous games to see how the fans and the young people up there bonded so nicely, so thoroughly, so prayerfully, every Saturday.
I never forget that, whatever we are going through - and will go through in the months to come - we all have it SO much better than those we have waved at. We need to keep the wave - someway, somehow - for them.
