I'm a fan. I'm claiming a moral victory last night.

True, it would have been nice to actually get the win, but at the end of the day, it isn't going to affect the outcome of the season. What can affect this season, and the seasons to come, is that these guys now know they can hang with the rest of the Big Ten. Not all games will be wins, and there may even be regressive games, but I get the sense they've turned the corner in their own expectations. Those elevated expectations will mean more wins down the road. On the moral win/loss season, Iowa clobbered Wisconsin last night. That's worth something to a program that was beaten down to an inch of its life last year.

Moral victory? No such thing. I don't think Fran or anyone associated with the program views it as that, either.

It was a close loss in a game that was theirs to win.

Yes, it showed progress. But it also means they need to come out and play better next time.

killjoy.

Google "Hayden Fry moral victories"

As stated at the outset, I'm a fan, not the coach.

Perhaps my standards are not as high as yours, but they are apparently higher than Iowafarmgirl who would sell her soul for some victories (right down to the red uniforms). ;)

This is a very good post. The IA team can gain from this loss, and learn and grow from it...I agree that Ws and Ls are not that significant at this point as a post-season tourny is not likely. Your post is a bit more nuanced than: there is no such thing...and definitely has some merit.

Fans can have all of the moral victories they/we want...you just don't want the coach and the team settling for them. As fans, it's not a bad thing to applaud the effort and the improvement...and yet it's perfectly fine to be PO'ed the Hawks didn't get the win...you don't have to be on one side or the other...it can be both...and it is both, for me.

Go Hawks!

The only important thing is that the players and coaches were far from satisfied, and McCaffery made it very clear that his post game speech was far from pleasant.

I'm a big fan of Hayden Fry and agree with his thoughts on no moral victories or good losses. With that said, last nights game showed the team, the fans and the rest of the conference that we are done messing around. I have a sneaky feeling that those close losses are going to turn into big wins in one, maybe two, more seasons.

The real victories come when we beat, say, Minny or Michigan soon. I would've LOVED to beat Wisky (I live in Madison and despise Becky Badger), but was encouraged by the team effort.

Moral victories suck. We've had moral victories up to our eyeballs the last four years and that's pathetic and old.

Guess we did win the first half though (Dan McCarney moral victoryism).;)

Moral victories are for losers and last-place teams. Moral victory equals losing attitude.

As Hayden said: “Losing is losing and we didn’t play well. These kids have been babied and pampered so much when they lose that it makes me sick. Losing and looking good is a bunch of crap.”

Coach McCaffery said after the game: “I wasn’t happy. I’ll be honest with you. If you were in there, there was nothing resembling a moral victory. I was not happty at all. Sixteen offensive rebounds, loose ball in a two-point game and we don’t get it, jump ball. Not happy at all.”

Definition of Moral Victory..
A moral victory occurs when a person, team, army or other group loses a confrontation, and yet achieves some other moral gain.

Sorry just not buying the losing attitude with someone saying Iowa achieved a moral victory. Iowa is the last place team in the conference. They took the 14th ranked team in the nation to overtime. There is some positives to take away from this loss. Anyone saying otherwise is kidding themselves. If your not happy about the loss I accept that but to say Iowa didn't gain anything from it is wrong.

I also expect Fran to throw down the coach speak. However I'm willing to bet that isn't at all how he feels about last nights game.

I'm sorry but during the Lickliter era, I don't recall many moral victories at all. Lickliter ball was gross and disgusting and didn't ever resemble basketball.
