Illinois/Michigan Observations

Took in the Illinois/Michigan game today. My wife is a huge UM fan, so we go to 5 or 6 games a year.

Illinois:
Bruce Weber is changing my mind that it is clear cut who the biggest whiner of coaches is....it is still Izzo, but he mad a spectacle of himself today. Since when is it okay for coaches to be on the floor and impede player movement? Weber did nothing, but complain even when there were six minutes left in the game and the foul advantage for Illinois was 7-0, he wanted call after call and should have been T'd up a couple times.

Leonard has a long way to go still at this point. He is improved, but against Michigan's smaller defenders he let himself get taken off the block...Trey Burke pushed him off the block multiple times. Leonard rebounded well, but struggled with anything else today.

Illinois is very handsy on defense, they were mugging guys off the ball. Abrams was the worst and it was amazing how he was dumbfounded when he got called for a foul. Bertrand was talking and pushing Hardaway until TH hit some shots...didn't see him jawing much or on the floor a lot after that. If they are allowed to be grabby and pushy they will, Michigan adjusted and at one point off the ball Hardaway put either Bertrand or Paul on the ground with no call.

Illinois is the most atheletic team I have seen in person, even more than Kansas whom I saw last year, but they just runaround with no purpose a lot of the times on both sides of the floor. Weber has little control over his team and if they continue to play they way they have, he will be out of a job if he isn't already.

Michigan:
They play with the demeanor of their coach; Hardaway has been frustrated all season for some reason, mainly because his shot has not been that good at any point this season. Novak/Douglass don't panic and just understand their roles more than anything.

Trey Burke is the most impactful freshman in the conference. Zeller may be the better player, but Burke came in with little balleyhoo and has emerged as Michigan's best player right now. The other thing is, if it matters, he has his team in a position to win the conference. There is one thing about the FOY award that can come into play, where that player's team finishes in comparison to others. Burke draws the other teams best defender, not something I think even Michigan expected.

Michigan understands how to play team defense. Jordan Morgan is one of the best single post defenders, but he struggled today and Michigan made up for it in many ways. They just put in a monumental effort and understand positioning. Michigan is not the best defensive team in the BIG, but they take big men out of the game. Sullinger got the better of them earlier this year, it will be interesting to see what Michigan does against him Saturday...I will be at that game as well.

Illinois has more individual talent than Michigan, but Michigan believes in their team a lot more than Illinois does.

Cliff notes: Illinois is poorly coached and is soft sans Leonard. But Leonard is a head case.
Illinois also takes to many poor shots.

I don't check in on the Illini fan base, so does anyone know if Webber is on the hot seat? They have been mired in mediocrity that last several years and are so up and down. I have to imagine their fan base is getting ready for a change.

I saw that the coach was overreacting too and your right about their players being handsy. A good ref would call fouls when they are all over players like that but they are few and far between.

Don't know about the Illini boards, but the new Illinois AD isn't giving any public support to Weber right now.

Weber has been recruiting really well the past few seasons, which has bought him time, but now that Illinois has a serious shot to miss the tournament, he might have used up all of that good will.

That is why the illini faithful are not behind Weber anymore. Previously he was a good coach that was not recruiting at a high level. Now he is recruiting at a high level but his teams are not playing well.
They are in serious jeopardy of not going to the dance. If I had to guess right now, I would say they're out. They have a tough schedule to finish the year too.

Paul had 21 points, but 7 TO's. Leonard had 12 boards, but only got 5 shots. Richardson goes 1 for 8 from the three point line. Weber spent half the game five feet onto the playing floor. I guess he figured the refs couldn't hear him whining from the sidelines. Unfortunately, they'll still beat us over there.

Weber is a terrible X and O coach but an amazing recruiter.

Early in the game the plays were designed to go through Leonard and they had a nice lead. Leonard got in foul trouble and the remainder of the game we saw Illinois guards dribble around and play streetball.

Leonard is damn good but the team doesn't do him many favors. The commentators were even talking about it early in the game where Illinois guards would never get the kid the ball in the right location or at the right time.

The best part of the game was the o/u.

I had the over @ 118.0. At halftime I looked at the 2nd half line and it was 66. That gave me a ton of points between my cover and the under for the 2nd half. I won both sides.

Gotta love halftime lines.

I've never been overly impressed with Weber. He made his name with that early group of Brian Cook, Deron Williams, Dee Brown (I'd forgotten just how incredible he was until I looked the basketball team's Wikipedia page), Luther Head, and James Augustine. They haven't made past the second round since that group made their run to the national championship game in 2005.

And all those guys were Billy's guys.

I still don't believe we beat Michigan by 16...and I was there. And then we turn around and lose at home to Nebraska a team that PSU just throttled.

Purdue
at Nebraska
at OSU
Iowa
Michigan
at Wisconsin

I could see them winning 4 of those games and they would have 20 wins and 9-9 in the B1G. That would probably get them in the tournament. It certainly won't be easy though.
