of Chad Leisikow’s recent sit down with KF, go see it now. It might be the greatest 6 minutes I’ve ever seen from KF. Between his waxing poetic about Hayden and putting his staff together, emotional KF, followed by snorting KF...it’s freaking epic!

Boy...when KF reaches into his memory bank and hits one of those life changing moments...he doesn't just remember the details, he feels the same emotion of what it meant to him at the time like he's there. He goes from guarded and professional to an emotional mess in two seconds.

My wife is like that. She can call up a time when I really screwed up...and she not only remembers the details of what I did...she feels the same emotion like it just happened...so I have that going for me.

Say what you will about his conservative nature...but this is a man that cares deeply, not just about his program...but how his life was blessed with the people that got him to this point...and he's genuinely, heart-felt grateful.

Good stuff.

And could you see Saban do this about anybody he coached for or with? Kirk kind of reminds me a little of Dick Vermeil.

How can anybody ever recommend Kirk getting fired? We will never be able to replace Kirk just like we could never replace Hayden. We have been so fortunate to have two of the finest coaches and people, leading our program for the last 40 years. When KF retires, I want him to go out on his terms. Not like Bobby Bowden or JoePa. I don’t know if we will be fortunate enough to find someone else who will be another legend. Yes and I think down the road, KF will also be known as a legend. We will someday see his statue standing there. There will come a time when we yearn for the KF years. So of you that are always calling for KF to be fired, just stfu!

I don’t want KF fired at all. But he’s not gonna coach forever and I sure as shit don’t want his dork of a kid to be the HC. When (not if) that happens we’re gonna “yearn for the KF years.”

Brian Ferentz is in line for the HC job...but he's not going to get it with the offense he put on the field this year. He's going to have to show some game planning chops and have more success, but don't fool yourself...if Barta is the guy making the decision...he's looking for consistency and longevity. Brian wouldn't be seeking the next NFL job that comes along (if he's successful).

...if Barta is the guy making the decision...
Barta is 100% not the guy making that decision. He has nothing to do with it. Major donors are going to decide who the next football coach at Iowa is, and it will be BF. I know you may not believe it but we’ll have to just disagree on that. I’m fine with that.

The Pacha family, the Tippies, Uncle Bruce, the Clausens, the Luing family...several others. Those are the people who make those calls whether you want to believe it or not. I can’t help ya if you want to put your head in the sand. This is a completely different dynamic than what they have at say, Wisconsin where Alvarez is in charge. He has both football knowledge as well the trust of the donor base to get free reign and hire/fire coaches in revenue sports.

Gary Barta is at the U to fundraise, and run the non revenue sports. Absolutely nothing more. He calls no shots on the direction of the men’s basketball or football programs, and yes I do know that first hand, for a fact. Again, GB is paid to fundraise (which he’s surprisingly good at) and direct the golf, rowing, and skeeball teams.

I loved Hayden for what he did with MY football program. I loved his down home manner and humor and cliches. But I dont really understand the man as I was an outsider. The stories and testimonials from the insiders make me appreciate what he truly was, a GREAT human being in a position that let him build boys into men. I imagine the majority of his players became successful human beings in whatever endeavor they chose, mainly because of Hayden Fry. The more I read about Fry, the more I miss him and appreciate him. And I never met the man, yet he had that much of an impact on my life.

You do realize that I am the first one that predicted BF would become our next football coach nearly two years ago. If BF indeed becomes our next coach, I believe that he will open up the offense even more. I think KF is the one that is resisting too much change, too soon. But Iowa is passing the ball more often and I’m starting to see a little RPO starting to emerge out of our offense lately. BF is trying to effect a change in our offensive philosophy, but only to the extent that KF will allow.

"nothing to do with it"? Come on, Fry. I get the influence all those donors exert, and it's big. But "nothing to do with it" is a little over the top man.

I believe you underestimate Gary's influence and they aren't calling in all the big donors and asking, "hey, help us make this decision." You'd get 25 different opinions...wealthy people tend to think their opinion is pretty damn important if you weren't privy to that fact. Guys get wealthy and suddenly they are better looking and so much smarter almost overnight. I believe Kanye West said it best, "I ain't saying she's a golddigger, but she ain't hanging with no broke n*&%**ers."

Roy Carver was a great industrial engineer / businessman...I'm not sure I'd trust his judgement in choosing a football coach or basketball coach and I don't think he wanted to either.

Now...I know Gary Barta is no Bump Elliott, but if he's doing more than keeping the large money informed, and stroking their egos with their pseudo "involvement"...I'd be really surprised. The more likely influencers / decision makers in the next football coach at the University of Iowa would be Kirk Ferentz and Phil Parker. Those guys know football.

Personally, I don't want some rich dude pushing an agenda because he thinks his knowledge base spans football too. It usually doesn't...the NFL is a perfect place to view how that's worked for owners.
