If there's anything to the Jamie Dixon...

St Louis is where the Midwest region is being hosted. Both UNI and Tennessee will be in St Louis.

Now is the time-- Barta needs to strike and go after Dixon. It does not hurt to contact him with an offer to increase his pay and provide a change of scenery. He may not be at all interested, but I sure hope Barta tries hard and is persistent. How great would it be mid-week if all of a sudden news broke that Dixon was going to be our next coach? Proven winner at a high level.

I keep going back to this-- would Barta really make the Lickliter move without a plan to upgrade? Just seems so strange to make a move to pay a $2.4 million buy-out then not make a hire that is a clear step-up.

Yes he HAD to make a move. We won 10 games. 2 players (maybe 3)were going to leave the program if Lick stayed. The arena was empty and there was no buzz about Hawkeye hoops. I have heard nothing that makes me think Jamie Dixon is interested in moving on.

It sounds like Depaul is going to go after him aggressively. He has some relationships with people at Depaul. I'm pretty sure we would dish out a lot more money than Depaul would, though.

I would be shocked if Dixon would even consider leaving Pitt for Iowa.

Where is all this Dixon talk even coming from? I just don't see what reason he would leave that program to come here. I don't buy the Steelers/Penguins 3rd fiddle argument either. If he wanted to leave he could have his pick of open jobs including Oregon where he could battle his predecessor at UCLA.

I think a lot of people would be surprised if Dixon were to come to Iowa, but it isn't like we don't have anything to offer. I think we will definitely find out whether or not Barta can sell the program or not. These coaches would listen if the terms were right. A coach like Dixon would definitely feel like he could build something here at Iowa. Sometimes guys get bored at a place and sometimes they feel like they have accomplished all they can.

In Dixon's case, he has been there for 8 years I think. He has done a great job with this year's team when many thought they would be down. This may be the greatest opportunity to cash in on what he has accomplished. I would be surprised if he left, but I wouldn't rule it out if Barta were able to put in a major sell job.

I may be overly optimistic, but I still think that Iowa could be a major player again. It wouldn't take that much to turn our program around with the right guy. Dixon is one of those guys who would be a difference maker, so I think you have to give it a shot and see what happens. JMHO

Dixion inherited a very good program. Can he re-build one?

I like the toughness his teams display but I'm a little skeptical.

Iowa Basketball is not going to land a Jamie Dixon caliber coach. Iowa Basketball is not a high caliber program anymore. Iowa Basketball is not going to land a BCS conference coach.

You may be right and I guess we will all find out soon enough. I really hope you are wrong, but will support whoever our new hire is. Hopefully, Barta is a better salesman and can generate some sort of passion that would trigger a coach like Dixon to really consider coming to Iowa. If you are an AD at a BigTen school, you need to be able to hire a proven coach in my opinion.

So Tweeterhawk, you think the coach in your avatar is going to say no? Or you think he is going to get passed over for someone less underwhelming then an assistant coach?

Your comment just doesn't make sense to me given that you like Forbes. I like Forbes too, I would be happy with the hire. I don't think it is possible though to be more underwhelmed than an assistant.

So why even try, right? Barta should just resign himself to the fact that Iowa is a second class program that would only be able to hire second class coaches.

No offense, but that is loser talk. I refuse to believe that...given the right offer...Barta would not be able to hire a top-flight coach.

As for the fans being underwhelmed at whoever is hired....I guarantee there will be people complaining on the message boards no matter WHO it is.
