If my calculations are correct...

Because our offense sucks, and we can't stop teams when it matters the most. Our defense really didn't show up against the teams we lost to.

Is it your goal today to make as many idiotic takes as possible? Our defense was just fine against Wisconsin, Northwestern and Penn State. Our offense gifted Wisconsin with two easy TD's off turnovers. NW scored a whopping 14 points. Penn State barely had 300 yards of total offense. The Purdue game was the only game where our defense really had a let down.

with Ohio State scoring 62 points...Iowa has the number one scoring defense in the Big Ten...17.4 for Iowa vs. 17.5 for Michigan. LOL. Michigan's great defense is now behind Iowa.
But still 3 GB of Michigan in conference record.

That’s the stat that matters.

That's a nice year for Phil. I was about to say something negative here...but decided to not bother

I agree with Stanzi. You can't put our issues on the defense. Sure...Purdue was not the best and you can question some strategy there...but Purdue is a very good offensive football team with the most dynamic player in the country...Rondel Moore. Phil chose to double him...in most situations...and it left our corners exposed. Moss had a tough, tough day.

The reality is that Phil Parker started the year without a LB that had played a snap of defensive football for Iowa. You were starting two new corners for the most part also. That's pretty remarkable when you consider they gave up the fewest points of all B10 teams...including Michigan.

If you look at the personnel returning on defense...it's pretty easy to say, we will be a better defense next year...and it could be by a long ways.

Epenesa, Nelson, and Golston are very, very good pass rushers. You add Nixon, Shannon, and Linderbaum on the DL. Shannon and Linderbaum will be much different players next year...and there have been good reviews on where Nixon is. Lattimore returns, Rieff returns also. The one thing we will have is natural size on the inside. Reese will have them ready technique wise.

Iowa is really deep at LB now too. Colbert is a stud...and is playing really well for a redshirt freshman. It's going to be hard to unseat him. Welsh and Jones on the inside, Neiman on the outside. Hell, Neiman may move inside too. There are several young guys that are going to compete also...Doyle, MacDonald, & Benson. Depth. Mends could get a medical too right?

The secondary is going to have two really solid safeties...Hooker and Stone....and you have several great options at corner...Hankins, Ojemudia, Brents, Moss...etc.

I've never seen a defense this deep before at Iowa. Every position group has players that have played significant minutes and you are going to have incredible competition. The future is bright on defense.

Excellent post. I agree we will be better on the defensive side next year. The only question will be by how much? Phil really has a way of getting the best out of his players.

Very good info and analysis. Colbert is playing very well and I think when he got beat on the nebby wheel route it is one of the few times I have seen him make a mistake (others may disagree). But he has Hitchens and Kirksey type quicks and speed and the frame to tackle.

Hooker is excellent and Stone is coming on. Could be the best safety pair since 08-10 with Sash and Greenwood.

I always love watching the hawks play defense even way back as they are usually gritty and very good.

I just hope Parker wants to blitz a little more instead of letting some qbs get too comfortable in big games and big spots

You guys really expect anything less from Caddy? He's the king of hyperbole.
After typing pretty much the exact same post for four years I don't think he's changing anytime soon.

But he will brag about his game attendance and season ticket streak and you get the feeling he's either a masochist or putting us on for his own amusement.

Outside of the CB spots, things are looking pretty good on defense as long as Nelson sticks around.

Number 1 defense in the conference and highest scoring offense since 2002 = 8-4.
That highest scoring offense stat in a way might be somewhat misleading.

Off the top of my head I can remember at least 4 non offensive touchdowns and a safety, not to mention the two TD drives of less than 20 yards last week against ILL. All of this is to say our offense probabaly isn’t as good as those stats make it appear, which I think is more in line with reality.
