If Bulaga, Richardson and Spievey

would return for 1 more year, do you believe that we would go 12-0 or would we lose 1 or 2 games.

I would predict 11-1. Loss to Michigan. (Maybe Arizona)

The answer to such a question starts with "anything is possible".

That said, for ANY team to go undefeated, an incredible amount of luck is required. Having a "chance" to go unbeaten, is a measure of how good a team is...but actually doing so requires much more than just being good.

So you could more easily argue for Iowa being the best team in the nation...than you could reasonably expect them to go unbeaten. There are just too many factors in play on any given Saturday...regardless of how good a team may be.

As for the Hawks...even with Bulaga back...there are still a number of question marks along the offensive line. That is a potential weakness that must be fixed...and it may well be in the off season...before talk of National Championships can be taken seriously. The loss of Calloway, Richardson, and Eubanks WILL be felt...it WILL take time to get the new OL up to speed...IF it gets up to speed.

Further, while there seems to be much talent and potential...replacing Angerer and Edds will be tough as well. Less, perhaps, from a talent perspective than from a leadership/toughness point of view.

I don't mention these issues to be negative...every team has issues/shoes to fill as it enters a new year. And every team will address those problems the best it can...sometimes affirmatively and sometimes not. Its virtually impossible to know ahead of time how that will work out...there is much reason for optimism in Iowa's case but there are no guarantees, even in cases where there appears to be talented replacements.

A football team is mixture of chemical elements....every alteration in that mixture can end in a new and unique compound. Which brings this discussion back to....ANYTHING is possible, including a National Championship.

11-1 would be a heck of a season...12-0 would definitely be possible as well with all those guys back, I'd give it maybe a 10-15% chance. I think just as important is keeping all of our RB's healthy so we have a good ground game. I'm excited for the Orange Bowl and already looking forward to the 2010 season!

As others have responded, "anything is possible", but in any case, I don't see Iowa losing to michigan in 2010. We played one of our worst games against them this past season, and still won and hung 30 on them.

And they hung 28 on us, not exactly a dominating performance. We're just not good enough to run roughshod over anyone. We do it by doing a better job of managing the game, which leaves a lot of room for doubt.

Did you miss the part where I wrote this: "We played one of our worst games against them this past season..."?

2010 is certainly promising if they all return...

But even with those guys our talent level isn't so dominant that we can expect to go 11-1 or 12-0. Just too many variables that can impact a season. The good news is the program is at a point where our strength on both lines allows Iowa to be in every game no matter the opponent. But we aren't a team that is just going to run away and hide either from good teams.
That said, the overall talent and depth in the program right now is as good as it's ever been in the Ferentz era, especially if the aforementioned players return.
