If Barta were to make a move

Should he make it right after the season or wait until after signing day were we could add another pg?

I'm really torn on this.

+1 but I have a feeling Barta is clueless. I mean any AD that watches this and says he fully supports his coach is clueless.

Barta won't make a move...PERIOD!! He has already said he is fully behind Lickliter, thinks his team is exciting and future looks promising. Lickliter will be around AT LEAST two more years.

I don't understand what people think Barta is suppossed to do? Is he suppossed to ridicule Lick in the media? What coach would want to come coach at Iowa for an AD that rips his coaches in the media?

I think Barta will give Lick one more season, which I wish he wouldn't but I just don't understand you expect of Barta to do in the media?

Maybe Mrs. Lickliter will transfer and give Mr. Lickliter an ultimatum to follow or stay...his choice, but she has seen enough Iowa BB to last a lifetime, and she is heading back to Indiana!

We can only hope and pray that Barta has the guts and good sense to fire Lick after the Michigan loss next thursday.

I can't say for sure about the TWO more years, but I am 99.9999999% convinced that we will see Lickliter sitting on our bench again next year. I saw an article a few weeks ago where Barta publicly announced his support for Lickliter, and stated "I have no intention of changing coaches." I am assuming he meant that he isn't changing coaches THIS year, but either way, it didn't sound like an AD who was anywhere near making a change. Ryno may very well be right about the two more years. If so, Barta isn't going to have a fanbase by then.

I guess I'm just at the point where I am going to watch the game on Thursday, and then see what happens in terms of player defections, coaching changes, or lack thereof.

If true then Barta won't be here either.

What if... Iowa were to win an outright Big 10 football title this season and won another BCS bowl game?

I know Ferentz wasn't his hire but I would still think this would help his job security, not to mention that if they had an incredible season and won a BCS bowl game it would bring a lot of money in.

I guess I'm just making the point that Barta's future doesn't soley rest on the bball program.

If he were anywhere near making a coaching change, do you think he would hint at it at all? It's not like he's going to come out and say "I am 50% behind our current coach." There is virtually no information to be gained from listening to athletic directors' public statements. Until he either gives Lick a public ultimatum or fires him, we really have no idea what's going on in Barta's mind. It's entirely possible that he's already given Lick a confidential ultimatum. A public ultimatum (like Alford) or an advance public statement that the contract would not be renewed (like Mr. Davis) would simply hurt recruiting until the coach was either off the hot seat or gone.

The point is that there really is nothing to be gained by making a public statemnt ahead of time that you're going to make a move. It can only hurt you. It might calm down the rabid fans calling for the coach's head, but it's not like doing so will affect revenue at all until the move is made. Those fans were already staying home anyway.

Loser? When he was hired here, Lick was just coming off receiving the Nat'l Coach of the Year award... we ALL thought we were getting a heck of a coach.

OK, it just didn't work out... Barta just needs to come around to that conclusion and write off the (ever growing) losses.

Exactly. It's the same thing that Pollard is doing at ISU. The silence is deafening.

While many (including me) aren't thrilled with the public attitude Barta has displayed addressing the Men's Basketball program, his job is more than just one sport.

The Football team just came off of a dream season with even better expectations for next year. The wrestling team just wrapped up another Big 10 Title and qualified everyone for nationals. The Women's basketball team was a breath away from winning the Big 10 Tourney.

Iowa athletics, as a whole, is doing very well. Men's basketball is our achillies heel right now. Barta does need to "address" it, but that is the only blemish on his record right now.

That would be all nice and great for Barta if he hired any of those coaches, but unfortunatly for him he didn't.

But the job of an AD is more than hiring coaches. That may be the part of the job that gets the most attention, but there is much, much, more to being an AD than that.

For instance one of the other accomplishments I failed to mention was the start of the new practice facilities and securing the funding for that project. In today's environment, that is no small feat.
