Compare the above to this years pathetic OOC joke. I want whoever is responsible for our OOC since 1999 to be fired NOW! I want his family deported. And I want his boss imprisoned.

Point taken but you forgot some cupcakes he had on his schedule.
Hayden did not get the schedule he really wanted until 1985 when Iowa played Drake, Northern Illinois and Iowa State in OOC.

That was followed up with UTEP, NIU and Iowa State in 1986.

But interesting thing is that it got harder again in later years from 1987 to 1994. Oregon, Colorado, Tennessee, Miami of FL, lots of good teams.

Then starting the mid 90's, they got ridiculously bad again.

1995 ooc was UNI, Iowa State and New Mexico State!

And the schedules stayed ridiculously bad until Hayden retired in 1998.

And you know what? injuries and Iowa's finish did not seem to matter based on the number of cupcakes they had on the schedule. The final lesson I believe seemed to be to just schedule Iowa State, 1 power team, and 1 cupcake. If you are good, you are good. If you suck, you suck. But at least you did not run away from your competition and give the season ticket holders interesting and worthwhile games to attend.

Western Kentucky, Kent State, and Chattanooga. (Alabama playing this year)
Arkansas State, Louisiana Monroe, Alabama A&M (Auburn)
Northwestern State, SMU, Rice (Baylor)

Iowa can't help that ISU sucks, EVERY YEAR. Very few teams play more than one power 5 game, out of conference. I would love to see Iowa play a real Power 5 school every year and let ISU hang in the wind.

Drake brings back memories. Don't know when the games were scheduled but in 79-81 Drake had a 3 game win streak against Big 8 teams and were 10-1 in one of those years. Of course the Big 8 teams were Colorado and K State which were very bad then.

just curious. how did playing a strong non conference schedule - when Fry did - help his team?

It didn't but it seemed the beefed up schedule came at the wrong time. There were holes in those teams. I don't remember strong OOC games hurting his good teams. His great teams earned it by beating Michigan and occasionally OSU. Very occasionally on the latter.

Hayden pretty much ushered in the cupcake era to Iowa. During Hayden's first 5 years he didn't play a non conference opponent that WASN'T a P5 team. That is crazy, but I'm sure this was the norm then. Teams had to sell tickets to earn money at the gate.

In 13 of his last 15 years he either played 1 or 2 cupcakes (non P5 teams) a year, so he pretty much played 9 or 10 P5 opponents each year. Now granted it was an 11 game schedule most of the time, but either way, Hayden had 1 or 2 cupcakes + ISU who was just as bad then as MAC level teams, so in essence he has 2 or 3 scheduled wins per year.

So what you are saying is that he was scheduling about like everyone else did.
OSU has raised the bar in the Big 10. The conference will continue to get better. Michigan is back. MSU is tougher than hell every year. Wisconsin is almost always good. Nebraska and Penn State will not stay down forever. Dump ISU, schedule one top 25 program and a couple MAC teams each year and call it good. The Big 10 schedule is plenty good enough to get their champion to the playoff round without killing yourself with your out of conference schedule.

Pretty much. I can't find a reason why we should be scheduling a tougher schedule than Nebraska, Wisconsin, OSU, Michigan, or MSU. I'm all for dumping ISU and adding a game like ND, Oklahoma, LSU, etc. I am NOT for playing 11 P5 games when nobody else (or maybe 1 team) is doing that in our conference.

The schedule the first 5 years of the Hayden era may have already been set before he got there by the Commings regime. He probably scheduled tougher teams when he had more confidence in where his program was at the time and weaker when he had less confidence.

Dude you are crazy if you think Kirk hasn't loaded up on weaklings . . . weaklings he can't dominate quite often. You think Hayden loses to an FCS school???

Oregon
Colorado
Nebraska
Oklahoma
UCLA
Miami of Fla
Tenn
Penn State

Are you blind, or just dumb?

You are really unintelligent Heatdawg if you can't see the difference. Kirk plays from fear. That's why we have a joke OOC. Hayden was willing to play top flight programs and schedule a couple P5 schools most years. Hayden was never hoping to get a first down (see Iowa's tepid final drive of the game). He told his charges to expect a first down against programs like ISU and NDSU. Hayden understood the psychology of the game better. Like Kirk he publicly was gracious toward his rival. But unlike Kirk he privately told his guys, "I know you're better than them. And you better know it when you take the field."

Dude Im not blind...may be stupid but that comment is so far out of left field you are either dyslexic or need serious help.

Ask him why he wants to get rid of ISU?

Hint: it's cuz he wants to upgrade the OOC. And that I agree with.
