I think Fran is secretly enjoying this

The controversy over what Dan Jockitch and other ESPN morons have said about Woody's eye pokes, and the terse response Fran gave Iowa media after the Maryland game, have accomplished several things in my opinion:

1) Deflected some of the attention from his player. Now the talking head idiots on ESPN and their blogs, and even Jon Miller, are spending as much time criticizing Fran for the way he handled two questions in his post-game news conference as they are addressing the issue of Woody's hand-to-eye contact. (Unfortunately, this also has detracted some from the way Iowa has played the past two weeks, but there's plenty of time to remedy that.)

2) Gotten the Iowa program some badly needed attention. All of it may not be positive, but publicity is publicity. More people know the terms "Iowa Hawkeyes," "Adam Woodbury" and "Fran McMcaffery" better than they did one week ago. Fran and Adam will make out just fine. And potential recruits saw a coach who'll stand up for his players.

3) Fran exhibited a mental toughness that he has been trying to instill in his players. While some in the media were aghast that Fran basically flipped his middle finger at them by curtly avoiding the question and then, when asked why it wasn't an "intelligent question," responded "Because I said so," Fran's players saw their coach refuse to throw one of their teammates under the bus and to tell the ink-stained wretches to go pound sand. I have to think in their hearts they applauded.

4) Fran has succeeded in turning this into "Fran And The Iowa Hawkeyes Versus The World." They now feel under fire, under assault. I fully expect the team to come out with a chip on its shoulder the rest of the way. They'll be mad. They've discovered a shooting touch and that they can play good, hard defense, a powerful combination. And they're driven, perhaps more than they have been all season. I wouldn't bet against Iowa in its remaining games.

I disagree. I think the whole overblown episode really irritates Fran, and I don't think all the negative press about Iowa's hoops program at a national level is particularly helpful.

It's ESPN trying to appeal to their East Coast fan base by creating a villian out of Woody. They know midwest fans and now SEC fans are tuning them out in favor of the BTN and SEC networks. I for one haven't watched ESPN in years unless I have to to watch the Hawks on their network and change the channel as soon as the games over back to the BTN.

Sadly Tweeter I think you not even close. IMO I think Fran is personally despising this.

as for #4 I don't get that one at all, because Iowa has been balling since the roadie to Michigan. We can only hope it continues.

I agree with most of what you said. I posted most of this on another thread. We were getting destroyed against Wisky. To the point that there was NO coming back... The exact opposite with Maryland. To think he did it on purpose, with ZERO to gain out of it, and everything to lose, is just nuts.

This whole thing has brought a lot of attention, mostly not good. But it has brought plenty of attention, and recruits will hear the Iowa Hawkeye coach vehemently defending his players... Should Fran have worded things differently? Probably so. Could have Fran's comments in defending his player, changed things that people have been saying? Probably not. . Would the national scene still be talking about? Yep...

One thing is for certain, it has brought a lot of national attention. How Fran spins passionately defending his players on a national stage, is not going to look bad to a potential recruit. Will this story fade? Absolutely. But Fran Now has the attention of the recruits, and can continue to carry on the conversation(s) for the months/years to come. I do not have a problem with a growing database of recruits.

Junkie, I think you are correct. To a recruit, I think this is huge in a positive way. It's getting Iowa noticed. And it shows a passionate coach who stands up for his players.

I personally don't have a problem with the way Fran handled the Woody questions after Maryland. I don't inderstand why Jon Miller and some in the national media have their panties in a bunch over it. Get over it. Move on.

These are my thoughts as well. Deace pretty much summed it up in the recent podcast. So some reporter got his feelings hurt in a presser...Oh No! Alert the authorities! Fran could of been nicer but it's not worthy of this type of uproar. It has a lot to do with local reporters and people in the industry sticking up for "their guy". So be it. I can think back to reporters getting the "next question" treatment in the past. Coaches like Parcells and Knight would do this weekly and for the most part, people would find it entertaining to see which reporter would touch a nerve. As far as this going into national media, I believe it has a lot to do with the fact that's there's room for the story. Like Deace said, there's no NFL scandal this week, or a player coming out of the closet. They squeezed as much as they could out of CP3 "Hates Women" last week. I do think however than Fran needs to apologize to Dolphin and he very well may have off air. Even if some don't like Dolph, he's our guy and he bleeds black n gold. I'm hoping Woody really finishes this season strong and forces the media to talk about his improved game.

I'm hearing "Breaking News" on ESPN as I type this....Sounds like a Little League scandal and I'm sure ESPN will pounce on this for the rest of the week.

I'd like to see the team play with a chip on their shoulder the rest of the way. And I wouldn't mind seeing the biggest chips on the shoulders of Adam Woodbury and his buddy, Mike Gesell. Seems to me those two are key to the success or failure of this team.

Should we be nervous that Dev Marble -- who some blamed for last season's collapse -- plans to be at the game with the Goofs?

Agree. I don't think Fran woulda' wanted it to go down this way, but it sets up the perfect "us vs the world" mindset that can be very helpful this time of year. I gotta good feeling about this team.

I'll agree with you about the BTN. But ESPN doesn't lose anything by fans tuning in to the SEC network - ESPN wholly owns that network. They don't even own a piece of the BTN.

I agree. I look at it this way: do reporters care if they annoy a coach by askin the same inane questions time and again, possibly rephrasing the question to make it sound new and fresh? I believe they don't care. If they do care, why do they persist? The questions that Fran is willing to answer have been answered. Move on.

I hope he is not, Boob Pelini was and you saw where that ended. When Barta's time ends, others will be held accountable. Fran only hurts himself when he looks out of control. Kirk, well, he hurts himself throughout the day, on the sideline and in front of a mic.

And you look like a grade A d-bag 24/7 with your idiotic and nonsensical posts.

Fran cares to much about Woodbury and his family to be enjoying it all. It remains to be seen, but it might help the Iowa team draw closer together as a team. Its to bad the world is full of idiots like Dakich and whoever else is trying to get attention at the Iowa basketball teams expense.

Journalists and media types are a brother/sister hood. It is they who get to decide what is a or isn't a valid/good/relevant/etc question. What we are seeing is a circling of the wagons by the "organization" to condemn an action that threatens their right to dictate questions. To me, the Woody issue has been over and it was sensational to bring it back up after the MD game. Sensationalism isn't journalism. I'd like to believe that is the point Fran was making.

No way is Fran "enjoying" any of this. He's a heart on his sleeves kinda guy. I don't think he revels in unintended consequences at all. He was tearing up right before he gave the WHO reporter the "unintelligent" quote when talking about the money the students had raised for cancer. At that place and time he was in no mood to talk about the eye poking thing again. When he'd already done it a handful of times previously. I mean seriously if reporters wanted to know the answers they could have just looked up what he'd said the week before. Reporters must be lazy and stupid if they thought he'd have a different answer then what he'd said earlier. Like all of a sudden he'd throw Woody under the bus... Please... no way.

For the first time in a while, I am 100% behind Fran and what he did. I LOVE what he did in the presser. Either you're with us or you're against us. He went full-on heel, and I think it's great. It's good when people hate Iowa, because that means we're winning. No one hates NIT teams.

I liked all his answers, and he kept his cool pretty well in light of all the stupid questions from reporters who try to perpetuate a non-story.

I did as well. If the media is going to go all "I'm a journalist" they need to also take that attitude into Kirk's pressers where they all become a bunch of obedient pets sitting quietly waiting for a treat. Fran doesn't need to be liked by everyone in the media. Like he said, he doesn't care what anyone thinks, he just wants to coach his team to wins. At the end of the day that's all fans really want as well.
