I suggested this back in June and took a beating...Dodd calls for splitting OSU & UM!

Division of Big Ten's super rivals would be addition for all - NCAA Football - CBSSports.com

The only thing I'd change from his divisional breakdown is to swap Illinois and Indiana. You just can't have the Big 3 together (PSU, UM, OSU), nor can you jump PSU halfway across the country. This preserves the key rivalries like OSU and UM...and lets OSU and UM have a chance to play each other for the championship. Seems to meet all the needs of the conference schools in terms of balance and preservation of rivalries.

You do realize that Dodd isnt the one making the decision right?

Re: I suggested this back in June and took a beating...Dodd calls for splitting OSU &

Yes, but he is someone with a solid feel and good contacts. One opinion of many, of course, and far from decisive...but a relevant opinion nonetheless.

Re: I suggested this back in June and took a beating...Dodd calls for splitting OSU &

I like this proposal. It would mean we don't play Wisconsin every year, but we have already faced that scenario (didn't play them in '93 or '94). It would allow us to start a new rivalry with Nebraska (almost certainly would be our final game of the year). Plus this is very balanced competitively.

Too many scenarios have Ohio State facing no competition in the East (unless Michigan returns to power) or is overloaded with Penn State, Michigan, MSU. This scenario is balanced and preserve a majority of rivalries.

Also, with going to 9 games, Iowa would play everyone in the Big Ten 2 out of every 3 years. So we wouldn't miss Wisconsin for long.

Re: I suggested this back in June and took a beating...Dodd calls for splitting OSU &

i don't think it is a big deal if they are in opposite divisions. They could still play every year, and this puts them in a possibility for the championship game. if they are in the same division, i'd be surprised.

mesa and ankle have one more thing in common.........

Re: I suggested this back in June and took a beating...Dodd calls for splitting OSU &

OSU and UM fans are almost universally opposed to this idea. I'd rather have OSU, UM and PSU in the same division than UM and OSU split. Playing twice in the same year would make the regular season game meaningless, thus diluting the rivalry IMO.....

Re: I suggested this back in June and took a beating...Dodd calls for splitting OSU &

I don't know where that comes from....that it makes the regular season game meaningless. On the contrary, that regular season game could be the deciding factor for one or both teams making it into the championship game. I'm going to assume, if what you say is correct about the fan bases...and I certainly don't doubt you, that the OSU and UM athletic directors are smarter than their fans.

Re: I suggested this back in June and took a beating...Dodd calls for splitting OSU &

I put mine out about a week prior to that...but I'm willing to share top billing with you. =)

Re: I suggested this back in June and took a beating...Dodd calls for splitting OSU &

OSU and UM playing back to back weekends would be a disaster. Moving the OSU-UM game from the last regular season game of the year would be met with outrage from alumni/fans. From what we hear OSU's AD isn't on board with splitting OSU-UM.....

Re: I suggested this back in June and took a beating...Dodd calls for splitting OSU &

That doesn't speak well of those fanbases...certainly would demonstrate a complete lack of understanding of the game of football. As I said, I'd hope that wiser heads in the administration would prevail. The argument that such an arrangement takes ANYTHING away from the importance of the seasonal game...is ludicrous.

Re: I suggested this back in June and took a beating...Dodd calls for splitting OSU &

I like it. Move the game to earlier in the year, and if they can both get through their respective divisions then they deserve to play in the Championship. With the 9 game conference schedule and 4 cross-division games, its very possible that 2 teams will be playing each other for the 2nd time in the Championship game on a regular basis, why not let that possibly be Mich & OSU?

Re: I suggested this back in June and took a beating...Dodd calls for splitting OSU &

It's not ludicrous at all. OSU and UM have one of the best rivalries in sports and are the 2 premier programs in the conference. Fans don't want the tradition of "The Game" ruined. It may be selfish but it isn't crazy or ludicrous by any means.....

Re: I suggested this back in June and took a beating...Dodd calls for splitting OSU &

I like this alignment. It takes nothing away from the regular season Mich vs. Ohio State game. Most of the time the loser of that game won't make the championship game... So I'd say it would still be a pretty important game.

No, you just do not understand the Big Ten or their football culture.
There is only one ''The Game'' in the country...it is the last saturday of the Big Ten season in the Shoe or the Big House. It is the single most valuable property of the Big Ten conference. You do not killed the golden goose that allowed every thing else to fall in place. You do not move ''The Game'' to October...it would cease to be ''The Game''.

Dodd and the rest of the outsiders keep want to kill '' The Game''...not sure why but probably because they are CBS or Big 12 related observers who envy and even hate '' The Game''. CBS does not have ''The Game'' so that makes sense, and the Big 12 was submarined by ''The Game'' this summer when Nebraska jumped to the league with ''The Game''.

Bottom line, as Alverez hinted the other day, nobody messes with ''The Game'', and that means Mich and OSU are in the East. Along with the other East schools. MSU,PSU,IU,and PU....done deal.

Re: I suggested this back in June and took a beating...Dodd calls for splitting OSU &

The only way this will work in my mind is by swapping Northwestern with Wisconsin. I want a chance of beating Wisconsin every year.

Nor would it be. Wanting to protect the rivalry, is of course, quite reasonable. Thinking this would damage it is what is ludicrous.

Having followed the Big Ten in intimate detail for 35 years...I'd say I do understand the culture. The point you're entirely missing is that "the game" is not "messed with"...if anything, its significance is enhanced. So you're asserting a false premise...ie, that "the game" is negatively impacted. You are correct in stating the importance of the game...but nobody has ever asserted otherwise, so you're making a moot point. The game itself remains as important as ever...if not moreso...and there is now an added benefit of an OSU vs UM championship game. You wanna talk about a "the Game"...that would be it.

Agreed.

You might want to wait a couple more weeks Mesa til the actual divisions are released. There will be time enough for gloating, or bemoaning what they come out with the official divisions...:D

If there exists a potential for multiple OSU-Michigan games in one season, then it becomes ''The Games'', and is no longer ''The Game'' which everyone knows is played the last saturday of the Big Ten season.
Once it becomes anything but ''The Game'' it becomes something entirely different. Another big game in October, maybe, but no longer ''The Game''.

As Alvarez hinted the other day...they will not be destroying traditions like ''The Game'' which brought them to the uniquely powerful position in the first place. They will start with one mutually agreed upon goal: Michigan-OSU will play on the last Saturday of the Big ten season, every single season...and anything that will undercut that...is dismissed out of hand, including a possibility of back to back Mich-OSU games.

Re: I suggested this back in June and took a beating...Dodd calls for splitting OSU &

I guess we'll know sometime next month...my guess is there will be a few surprises in the final product and that Dodd may be right on track. We'll have to wait and see.
