I Love This Fran Quote!

+1 I just want to win. It's been way too long.

I think all would agree with that, but we know we will lose our fair share of games this year, but at least losing won't be as painful as the last few years with this style. I'm excited for the season and style of play and plan on making the opener and hopefully a couple more games this season.

Tecmo, I don't really agree with your assessment of losing in a fast break style being less painful to watch. When two teams are going up and down the floor, one can get behind the other pretty quick. That may not be much fun to watch. I am not saying that I won't enjoy a little faster pace of play, but that style in a losing effort can be pretty painful to watch.

Give me a break watching Lick's team play was like watching paint dry. I knew we were going to lose the majority of our games, but i still watched (painfully). An up tempo style will make a world of difference. Now in 2 years if we are still losing, then yes, at that point i will not be satisfied with just a more up-tempo style.

I think Lick's worst losses were to Minnesota. Those were the most brutal basketball games I've seen since the old 6 on 6 half court girls games when I was in high school.

While maybe not better, losing 96-78 is way more entertaining than losing 53-42. Even winning 53-42 is boring. I'd much rather win, but if you're only going to win 10 games, might as well play uptempo and have some fun and make it enjoyable for the fans. And yes, watching Davis' teams give up easy fast break after easy fast break was infuriating, but even their loses had some entertainment value, unlike the last 3 seasons.

That said, I'm expecting a much improved Hawk team this year, even though the record may not be significantly better. I do expect them to get blown out a few times, because of the pace, but I also expect them to win a couple they shouldn't, because of that same pace.

This was the most encouraging thing I read about media day from the QC times:

And when they weren’t running, lifting weights or taking a few shots on the court, the Hawkeyes were still spending time together.

McCaffery has hosted team gatherings at his home, giving everyone a chance to bond.

“It’s a totally different deal, totally different,” May said. “I think it has us all excited about the future. We’re ready to get practices started.”

The blowout losses to Michigan in the BT tournament weren't much fun either.

So, you'd rather watch a team milk every freaking second from the shot clock in order to cut the other teams possession time because you can't recruit with them? OK, to each his own...

Lick missed his calling. He should have been a 6 on 6 girls coach.

This was what I was meaning when I said losing will be less painful. Thank you MSGT.

I am being realistic that we will lose games, but at least the games will be watchable. It was impossible to sit through some of the disasters of the last few years.

Or just stayed at Butler, running a system someone else put in place. Though my guess is the Bulldogs are happy where they're at coaching-wise.

I want to see a coach who makes situational adjustments. If the transition game isn't working, slow it down. If the slow down isn't working, get out and run. Our last couple of coaches didn't seem to be able to make changes on the fly. But to return to my original point. If we are running and getting beat by 30, I won't find that any more entertaining than milking the clock and getting beat by 10.

Completely agree. I hate sloppy up and down ball just as much as I hate a grueling slow and torcherous beating. If track record is any indicator we should have a coaching staff who will make necessary adjustments and make the most out of what we are putting on the court.

I like how Fran insisted that we would always play fast, but not always shoot fast. Decision-making is paramount in the open court situation. That is MSU ball. They sprint on every possession, but do not force up quick bad shots if not there.

I liked everything I heard from Fran on how he is going to defend and attack on offense.

And I think that is what Fran is going to do. I think this "up tempo" thing confused people into thinking it's going to be run-and-gun the entire game. Fran's not stupid. He knows we don't have the athletes to do that the entire game. I think he means that we'll look to push the ball and get a quick basket if it's there. If not we'll pull it back and set up the half court and look for a good shot instead of intentionally bleeding the clock and chucking about a 25ft prayer with 3 seconds left to shoot. He will make adjustments when needed instead of operating like Lackluster's bull-headed approach to change.
