I imagine Iowa is the victim of some serious negative recruiting

Look at Painter's chippy comments last week. There's others that probably aren't as subtle. It probably happens with every coaching change. Add to it that Iowa basketball is considered far from a premium program right now, and I bet there a lot of sharks in the water. It's to be expected. But from what I've heard and read about McCaffery, I think he'll take this head on, and deal with it. My sense is he can exchange elbows if need be.

It's too bad if these guys don't want to come along for the ride. Some kids like to be trailblazers and get a program up and running, while others like the security and safety net of a program that is already established.

I wouldnt call Iowa under Lickliter "established"

Good point. Perhaps it would have happened if Lickliter was still around, particularly if Fuller and others had left.
Brust and Larson wouldnt have been able to get out of LOI's if Lick stayed. Most outs are based on if a new coach is hired. Glad Lick is gone and upset that the other two de-commited but if they dont want to be here carry on.

It wouldn't surprise me that some of these recruits were hoping and wishing for something to happen so that they could get out of their commitments. Lickliter was IMO the worst fit and might have been the worst hire in the history of Iowa Basketball. He brought ZERO to this program and was paid handsomely for it.

even if Lickliter was still here. Iowa is/was under no obligation to release those two, it's just common practice that schools release players from their LOI should they request it when there is a coaching change. Schools risk a lot by refusing to release guys from LOI as they don't want to develop a rep as a place that won't do what's best for the kid. Of course in the case of Tyler Smith, he signed with Tennessee out of high school, then Buzz Petersen was fired, he requested his release by Pearl and Tennessee, who then refused to release him. Went to a prep school (Hargrave Military), then to Iowa for a year and then back to Tennessee of all places.

And some like not losing to the UTSA's of the basketball world and taking severe 30+point beatdowns in conference for 2 or 3 years when all you have to do is ask for a release to avoid that fate...

I've thought the very same thing. I have to think that all four saw the collapse taking place in Iowa City this season and wondered about what they had signed up for. Can't say I blame them.

Both Larson and Brust still have interest (wether it is genuine or not I don't know) in Iowa. Not releasing them from their LOI would have been bad. They could've gone to a prep school then anywhere else. Just release them and see if you can re-recruit them.
