I have a couple of questions for you

Quarrrels hasnt played as far as I know. does he have a redshirt year available?

who is going to play LB for us next year?? Welch maybe Jones maybe? Looks to ,be a huge dropoff! Are we recruiting any JCs at LB or 4 star type kids that could come in and play?

Quarrels redshirted as a freshman at New Mexico so he’s done after this year.

At LB, if the 3 seniors disappeared right now it would most likely be Mends, Hockaday, and Welch, but with three spots open there will be a ton of competition and shuffling at that spot over the spring and summer. If nothing else it will be fun to watch and hopefully whoever ends up on the field is remotely as competent. Say what you will about Bower, but it’s been a long time since we’ve had a core this good as a whole.

Quarrels has this year and next year to play. Graduated in 3 years.
 
The lb position could be shaky early on next year. If we don't get a playmaker receiver next year will be worse than this season
 
Breaking in 3 new lbs next year is a recipe for disaster. I am willing to bet we will see that Mends should have been playing in place of Bower the entire time. As far as Quarrels, well it says a lot that he can't even see the field with the lack of talent we see at that position.

Also it's been a long time since I stood up and yelled "************ BOWER!!!!" at my TV
 
I think Jones and Welch are probably the only "for sure" starters next season. After that, my guess is it will be open competition for the third spot with Hockaday, Mends, Taylor and Wade. Hockaday has only looked so-so when in there. He struggles with reads and getting off of blocks. Mends apparently struggles with the mental aspect of the game. Wieland is a wild card here. The word is that the coaches are quite high on him. There apparently also has been talk of moving Colbert to LB.

I noticed Hockaday had an elbow brace on last Saturday. Probably why they did the Nieman at MLB against Northwestern.

We just went through this when Hitchens, Morris and company graduated.
 
I think you will see Welch, Hockaday and then the 3rd spot will be pretty highly contested....Mends, Jones or someone else that climbs the ladder. Never fun to do a full shift change at any one position but I expect the secondary and DL to play pretty well next year, especially if somehow (big wish) Jackson stays. Leaves a big hole in the middle but I think we have some guys that can fill in pretty decently. Will suck to lose Jewell and even Niemann as he's played pretty well this year.
