Early going absolutely. Next year will be a process, though I think Vandy could light the world on fire in 2012 if Keenan Davis and the young receiver recruits develop into solid weapons, plus Moped Man. He's got better physical tools than Stanzi, it just remains to be seen if he has learned how to put some touch on the ball, and can read defenses efficiently.
And a poster in another thread had an interesting point: Tate seemed to regress when we had AY in the backfield and Tate was forced to become a drop-back passer. He was much better in the shotgun when he was able to pretty much play sandlot. That poster felt that had Jermelle, AY, etc. all gotten hurt, we'd have been 7-5 in 2004, too.
I thought that was interesting, and maybe even true. So I'm not sure that Tate would do as well with this supporting cast. Now if we had no running backs? Absolutely. I love/d Ed Hinkel, and Solomon was a big play threat, but DJK/McNutt/Reisner/Sandeman is a more potent receiving corps.
