I don't understand all the coaching behavior comments and concerns

A few Drake fans had some choice words for me about Franny Mac's coaching behavior during the Iowa-Drake game. My response: This is athletic competition! Antics are a part of basketball coaching. Most of the great coaches have a reputation for working officials: Wooden, Rupp, Smith, Knight, Coach K, Roy Williams, Pitino, etc. Do you remember when Roy Williams said that he didn't give a S--- about North Carolina? Well, now Coach Williams is considered to be one of the top 5% of coaches coaching basketball, and he is at North Carolina. A basketball game has many possessions, and a basketball coach MUST REACT DURING THE GAME! It is not the same behavior that you are expected to show at a garden party or in a library. A coach's coaching persona does not necessarily equate to how he acts as a person away from coaching. Have you seem Coach Knight have any issues at ESPN? The answer is no, because he is paid to analyze, not win. Sure, some of the coaches cross the line. But I have watched college basketball for 30 plus years, and most of the great coaches that I have seen have all worked the officials hard. Just my opinion.

Gosh, are most fans so young they don't remember Tom Davis during games? Loved the swinging arms and flying coat, the lower lip jutting firmly into the upper one after giving the zebras what-for, the roundish face that grew increasingly red, vividly contrasting against blonde and in later years white hair.

McCaffery would likely be annoying...

if you were an Iowa opponent. He's probably a bit more on the emotional side than average, but he's not out of line. Opponents will not like him because he will get after the refs and be demonstrative. Just remember this the next time we Iowa fans dislike Bo Ryan or Bruce Weber for trying to work the refs.

I have no problem with the way Coach Fran is on the sidelines, but I think the reaction from other fans is due more to the fact that its not their coach that is acting like that. Think about how many coaches people on the football board complained about this year because they worked the officials all game long and were emotional on the sideline. Just turn that around and that is what you have with other fans directed toward Fran.

If opponents' fans are complaining about Fran's behavior it must mean that we're winning. And that's a good thing.

Give me McCaffery's intensity 100% of the time vs. Lickliters disinterested stare. I love the passion!

We went from having Perry Como on the bench to having a coach that actually sticks up for his players and program. Things are changing in Iowa City. The Hawks are no longer going to just lay down without a fight.

With all due respect to Coach Lick I dont think it would have been in his best interest health wise to show the kind of emotion fran shows.

You should have heard all of the Hawk fans complaining about Mike Stoops behavior when we played AZ. Or Beils when playing Wisky. I personally could care less how another teams coach acts. But I do like the intensity that Fran brings and I think it's good for the program, athletes, and fans.

Do I find Tom Izzo annoying? Absolutely. I don't give a **** what the coach acts like, I'm there for the game.

I don't care when a coach gets pissy although I would like to see more T's given out for it. If a player can't do it why should a coach be able too.

It bothers me more in football when refs do nothing about a coach. Lynch openly mocked the ref right in front of him and that would get you T'd up in B-ball or tossed in baseball. It got him nothing in football.

That being said. Since a coach flipping out could have an effect on the game (in terms of working the refs and what not) I don't mind Fran doing what he does. It's fun to watch anyways.

Kind of a nice to be talking about whether the coach is too emotive on the sidelines rather than the boring style of play, bad execution or lack of athletes, wouldn't you say?

Regarding those complaining about a coach working the ref's, with some profanity thrown........I would submit that those same fans have never sworn at the TV for a ref's bad call in front of his wife and kids.....that never happens.

Do you know what he said? Do you know what he asked? He had every right at the Drake game to be ****** off. It was the second horribly officiated in-state game. Iowa State and Drake were both given home court advantage and then some by the officials.

After the game. Fran said he asked the ref what he seen that caused him to call a foul on Cole... He was asking for an explanation. He didn't attack the ref, call him bad names, throw anything, or tell him he made a bad call.

I don't know how he does it, I would have been ejected. The only worse call this year was the no-call charge, then give the out of bounds to Iowa State call. That one has no explanation. If it isn't called a charge, it was out of bounds... either way it should have been Iowa's basketball at the minimum. The only way the ref could have made any logic to giving the ball to Iowa State would have been to call a really bad defensive foul. This was in the last minute, down by 2. This greatly changed the outcome of this game... that shouldn't happen.

In the Drake game Iowa came out on fire and attacked Drake to a 16-3 lead, then something happened... Iowa started getting called for everything. Drake fans were going wild and loving it! Of course they are mad we had a head coach that stood up for his team and righted the ship. They want the Lickliter type who buries his head in his hands and says... my players just don't understand the system.

Perhaps the refs will not look at Iowa as a team they can just throw close calls against by next year.

The teams that are perceived to be better usually get the breaks... we have got to get back to that level.

Watching Iowa basketball with me is where my dog learned the f-word.

It's easier to dislike players or coaches that show a lot of emotion that you play against.
It's easier to like players or coaches that show a lot of emotion that play for your team.

I love Fran's intensity. This guy wants to win and it shows. I think Fran does a good job of working the officials. Would prefer his style 100 percent more than the previous regime.

That's funny Troy.

I was sitting beyond the endline about even with the Drake bench and Coach Phelps was working the refs all night. Personally I thought it was pretty funny.

The way that game was refereed (sp), it is no wonder both coaches were working the refs.
