I can't believe I'm actually pining for the "alford days"

Given the basketball IQ of many of our fans, it will take some time for the rest of the fanbase to feel the same way, but I am with you. Heck, that second half had me pining for Lickliter.

We could lose to UNI by 50 and I will never, ever, ever, EVER pine for the days of that clown.

Sure things aren't exactly great now, but at least I still care and watch the games.

Alford destroyed my passion for Iowa hoops, and it took 4-5 years for it to come back after he left.

I won't pine for Alford, but I absolutely pine for the level of success he achieved, which is far greater than anything we've done since he left.

I think the Iowa fan base hatred of Alford will be everlasting. Alford was very happy to leave Iowa, with the primay reason being he wasn't wanted by the AD, or the shcool, or the fans.

McCaffery will likely be the Iowa coach for a longer period than Alford. I don't have a problem with that, because he will be successful at Iowa when it's all said and done. IMHO.

This is based on the fact that our backcourt is the strength of this team, thus why we signed one guard and three forwards in this year's recruiting class?

Alford? Level of success? Wait...what?

61–67 in conference play. 1 tourney win in 8 seasons.

He had one season I'd call good, with the best group of Iowa kids the Hawks have ever had and he lost in the first round as a 3 seed.

Iowa has had no "level of success" since the Tom Davis era, and I've been pining for that for over 10 years. Go back to Lute Olsen and the success gets even better.

I'll never pine for Alford. Ever. I do wish we had a solid coach who had a clue like Tom Davis.

I want to believe it; after last night nite I just do not know anymore. The last 16 years of Iowa basketball has beat me down to the point I waffle on everything regarding Iowa basketball.

I didn't say he was successful. But I'd gladly take the bolded over what we've had post-Alford.

I remember you and your love for Alford.

The fact of the matter is Alford isn't a good coach and is an even worse human. That's the main reason why Iowa fans hated him. He allowed a rapist to play, lost kids to transfer almost every season, and was a bad coach.

He was happy to leave because he knew he couldn't win in the Big Ten. He still shows what a bad coach he is and how his teams fold when they play good teams.

He's garbage and I'm glad he's gone. I wanted him fired after Recker and Evans were seniors.

^^^ This is the correct answer.

I think people are remembering the Alford era as being better than it was, mainly because current times suck. Alford had one really good year (2005-06), another decent year (2000-01), and one other so-so year (2004-05) where Iowa barely snuck into the dance, despite a 7-9 conference record.

Otherwise, it was also a lot of disappointment. Alford lost 13 or more games 5 of his 8 seasons:

I remember plenty of times during Alf's 8 years where things looked just as ugly on the court as they do now. No, I don't pine for those times.

Fact is, Iowa hasn't had a REAL coach since 1999. Or to put it another way, since the 20th century.
