I bet AD Alvarez wants both Huskers and Irish

Wisconsin AD Barry Alvarez has always talked with pride about the various stops that he has made during his career. Do you suppose that he has exchanged a few phone calls with the AD's at Nebraska and Notre Dame in the past few weeks? I would guess so. I would also guess that because he played at Nebraska and coached at Notre Dame, that Barry would be the one of the first to want both of them in the league. These professional relationships that have developed over years of working in collegiate athletics are going to make some differences in the upcoming weeks. I also wonder if Ohio State's AD Gene Smith, who played at Notre Dame during their glory years, has made a few calls.

I know another team he is pushing for....if you want to believe that or not. Pollard and Alvarez are attached at the hip.

ISU4LYF,
I know they are close, and I give you a lot of credit for bringing your passion for ISU athletics to this forum. Much respect ISU4LYF. Do you honestly see Iowa State getting into this league? If so, please tell me why the Big Ten West should take ISU over Notre Dame, Nebraska, and Missouri? I like Iowa State. I would root for you big time if you were in the Mountain West. But ever since I moved to Central Iowa, it seems like all Iowa State fans care about is their feeling of "Schadenfreude" towards Iowa. It gets old, and I don't want Iowa to compete against Iowa State in football anymore. This rivalry has not been good for the state, because it divides the state.

I agree with you on not having ISU and Iowa playing each other, like the game, but divides the state. On your question with ISU to the Big 10, does it happen probably not, but if there were any chance at all, the time is now, the right guys are in place in the Big 10 to vote ISU in. So people may crack up at that, but off the top of my head, ISU has friends and connections with Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinios, and Michigan State, not to mention Iowa. ISU has alot of people in the Big 10 up to bat for them, will ISU be in the Big 10, probably not, but ISU has a better chance now than it ever will. Also ISU has been downplayed several times in this, ISU has a better shot than anyone gives them credit for.

Solid take! Now make your best case for ISU over Mizzou or Kansas, because Nebraska is an obvious choice. I believe that the Big Ten is only expanding by 3 in the West, and if ND comes in, they will be in the Big 10 West. Keep in mind Mizzou and Kansas have major media markets to prop them up, and Nebraska will absolutely swarm every road venue they go to. What would you say to The Big 10 Commish to support your case?

if he actually said he wants the Irish I'm a little surprised. I thought he stated that he wanted them to keep their independent status when he was saying that you need to have been at ND to understand how important it is to them.

ISU will not be brought into the Big 10. Why? The second they join they've just cost the league roughly $22 million dollars, which is what each of the current teams make in B10 Network TV money. How would ISU add any money to that pot? Nebraska, although a small state, adds all TV sets in their state plus maybe some others nationally because of their fan base. Each other prospective school (Mizzu, ND, Rutgers, Cuse, etc) adds a fair amount of TVs which would be expected to increase the amount of tv money put into the pot to be split equally. Since virtually the entire state of Iowa gets the BTN because of the Hawks there is nothing ISU can add financially to the mix and would instead be a financial cost (they'd get an equal portion of that money without actually bringing any new money to the table). And if anyone thinks for a second that any Big 10 school president is willing to give up any portion of their $22 million in BTN money annually they isn't not smart. There is no way any Big 10 school will be earning anything less than $22 million annually going forward and I would be surprised if that number didn't increase, because they aren't going to add schools if they aren't going to make any more money. Why would they go through all of this just to keep earning the same each year?
