How's your tourney pool run and why (scoring)

I've always done mine with upset points, as in you get bonus points equal to the difference in seeds. You would also get one point for a first round victory with the points doubling each round. So basically in the first round if you correctly picked a 12 over a 5 you got one point for the 1st Rd victory + 7 bonus points for the upset. I always preferred that because not all victories should be equal and you should be rewarded for correctly calling an upset.

I've heard of some pools using point spreads. How do those work?

I've also done 'pools' where you kick in 5 bucks and draw a team. Pays off with the following dollars:
5/team reaching Sweet 16,
10/team reaching Elite 8,
15/team reaching Final 4,
30/team reaching The Finals
40 to the Champion.

We have a pool we have done at work for many years (12 I think) where you assign confidence points (16 through 1) and you get those points each time that team wins. The bottom half of the standings at the end buy lunch for the top half. This pool does not require folks to pick individual games and allows some who do not know much about college BB to play.

I have also been in a pool where each players gets a 1-4 seed, 5-8 seed, 9-12 seed, and 13-16 seed (by drawing). Payouts are assigned starting at Elite 8. Again, no knowledge required but it makes the games exciting to watch for some.

I still enter as many pools with brackets as possible. The only bonus we have had in brackets is where you get bonus points for getting a certain amount of 1st round games (27 for instance) correct so the 1st round upsets can count going forward. With points increasing as the tourney goes on, it still comes down to who has the most teams in the Final 4 and most years, who has the champ.

Standard 1,2,4,8,16,32 pts by round progression. I've been in pools that were more complex and I think I like the straight forward way as well as any.
