Howe: Understanding the Uncommon Recruitment of Oliver Martin

Great article. The young man has a big decision ahead and hopefully everything works out fine for him.

In regards to recruiting, the wild card is always those "late bloomers". He's a perfect example, going from a 2 star to potential 4 star overnight. Kids progress at different stages ... look at all the players we've had who have not totally bloomed until their senior year in college. Another great example of this is Zach Johnson. He was not even the #1 player on his high school team and lightly recruited for college. He has now won 12 PGA events, 2 majors and is now #11 on the all-time PGA money list.

Thank you for reading. Agree with your comments. We see a lot of players develop into something special in our program. It's one of the great things about high school and college sports.

Good article. Recruiting is a weird business. Still wonder if things would have been different if he had been offered during the camp in Iowa City. It seems like the coaches responded more to the other offers rather than Martin himself.
