Howe: These Were the Hawkeyes Many Expected

Really nice article and well written. I would argue this point though: Don’t try to figure it out. It’s sports. The losses were deeper than that.

At times I wish I could totally like KF. At times I wish I could totally dislike KF as a coach. Instead I just kind of smirk and shake my head.

Yep, make it four in a row. I am thinking maybe we will play in the Outback Bowl.

this has been a strange season. Getting destroyed against PSU, I could swear Iowa was going to have a toss up against Illinois and have trouble keeping michigan under 70. Now, how the hell did this team lose to NDSU and northwestern? Preseason I said if the hawks don't win 9 I'd be disappointed, I stand by that.

I felt as much before the season as well. What I didn't think would happen is Wisconin, Penn St., and Michigan would all be top 10 in the country and Nebraska top 20. If you would have told me that going in, then my expectations would have been slightly different.

Totally weird year really for sure. I don't get how the D totally flipped the script and played completely lights out after that Penn St. debacle. Kudos to the kids for manning up, looking a challenge in the face, and then going right at it (the last 3 games). Proud of the way they bounced back and played with determination and pride.

After PSU I was wondering if Iowa would win another game. It looked almost like they were giving up on the season. But then things came together in a big way. What a way to end the regular season!

I hate playing the what if game, but the team we saw last night was the 10-2 team we expected. I hate thinking about what could have been, but it's hard not to.

And Michigan is wondering how they lost to us.
And OSU is wondering how they lost to Penn State.
And Oklahoma is wondering how they lost to Houston
And Notre Dame is wondering how they lost to everybody
ditto MSU
ditto UCLA
ditto Georgia
ditto Arkansas
ditto Texas
ditto Baylor
ditto TCU
what ifs for a lot of teams.
I am just happy with the way the season ended. Nebraska win was huge for us in Western Iowa.
Now let's hope for Stanford in the Holiday Bowl!

Nice win vs detested foe. Nebraska was rendered a mere speed bump.

But the team lacked coaching and motivation the first 9 games...hard to not call it another underachievement with so many returning starters....as KF picks up another half million bonus along the way.

Is a bowl win possible? Need to check that off the list....for a good 9-3 season...don't want to see Iowa run off the field again by a team with skill position talent and motivation.

Two 1,000 yard rushers...sweet.

I really enjoyed that this team has accomplished. What it was able to do after being embarrassed at Penn State was one of the most impressive stretches of football in my 20 years covering the program.

Did they reach all their goals? No. They wanted to make the playoff and get back to Indy. But instead of feeling sorry for themselves after PSU, these Hawkeyes sucked it up and did what they could at that point - won out.

Yeah, I'll remember NDSU and to a lesser degree Northwestern, but my lasting memory of this season will be the last three weeks. But, that's just me. I realize that's an individual thing.

Before the season, we'd be disappointed with 8-4.
2 of those losses were to Top 10 teams.
1 of those wins was to a Top 10 team, nationwide ABC audience.
1 other win was a blowout over a Top 20 team, nationwide ABC audience.
2 of those other losses are home loss head-scratchers.

This season feels like the 1996 season.
Then, we lost to Tulsa and a beat Top 10 teams.
This year, we lost to NDSU and beat a Top 10 team.

The bowl win was a nice finish.
Let's see how this bowl game, ends up.

IMO there are way to many bowl games anyways. I think they should drop all these back water bowl games, and just keep the playoff games for the NC game. I cant really blame McCaffrey & Fournette for skiping their bowl games. I myself wouldnt want to risk millions of dollars for a game that doesnt really matter when the smoke settles.

NW lost to IL State and not real good N IL

jNW was up and down all year. they played bad at first then caught fire but were a little underwhelming going down the stretch even though the record says maybe better than that.

I just hate seeing what should have been a really good iowa team lose to NDSU and jNW and if they play Wisky like they did the last 3 games they are a legit 11-1
