Howe: Spring Practice Notes, Observations

I'm going to go out on a limb...our defensive line is going to be very very good. Golston looks much bigger for some reason...maybe it was the angle of the camera...but the whole defensive line looked dominate. If the objective of Polesak is to play on the defensive side of the line of scrimmage...that wasn't happening yesterday.

I know the defense is always way ahead of the offense and has the luxury of seeing everything several hundred times...but we have size speed and athletes on the defensive line. Considering the defensive backs have several guys returning with experience. This defense is going to be more athletic than last year. Now, can they get the same production or better. I say yes.

I think with most...the interior of the offensive line is the big question. I would agree. Something tells me that Linderbaum is going to thrive. The praise has been so effusive that it sounds like he's cementing his role. Here's a very good athlete with good quickness that understands leverage. You heard it here first...he will win the Rimmington or whatever the best center is called. He played at Nebraska so I try to forget.

It's hard to glean much from these open scrimmages, but, I did come away with a few thoughts:

1. Our defensive line has a chance to be special. I think you'd be hard pressed to see a better end tandem that Eppy and Golston in the country. Golston is violent at the POA. Love that. He could be looking at a huge year.

2. I was struck at the number of times we saw the shotgun. It looks like the emphasis on spreading teams out with the WRs is real. Hopefully, it will pay off during the season.

3. Petras has some very nice ball fakes. He's got a bit of a hitch in his delivery, but, I like the way he uses slight of hand with the ball. That's a very underrated skill. Peyton Manning was perhaps the best ever at it.

4. We potentially have an embarrassment of riches at DB. I thought they all shined in terms of footwork and playing the ball.

I think that “limb” is pretty sturdy.

Good for Hooker and A. Nelson, but could you imagine if those 2 had come back? I think you are looking at top D of the Ferentz era there. Heck, they could still make a run at it without those 2, and it will be fun to see the new guys get some run.
