Howe: Some Iowa Football Families Conflicted When It Comes to B1G Decision

Good story Rob. Interesting to see the split between parents and a couple of the players as well. Daviyon Nixon seems to have a good head on his shoulders and I think has the right attitude:

“It’s very simple. Football is not worth more than my life,” he wrote on social media on Aug. 10.

He added: “(There’s) more to it (than) just football. It’s about life. (Yeah) we want to play, but if it saves my life then one year without football won’t hurt.”

Granted his view might be different as a junior or senior seeing the opportunity to play and impress NFL scouts decreasing or ended.

Thank you.

Daviyon is a junior. I think he is ready to break out. He’s an NFL player IMO. Losing this fall hurts him from a football standpoint.
Very interesting that in the two examples you provided here alone you have parents that don't agree in one instance and a father and son that don't agree in the other.

This virus is dividing opinions on how to deal with it, right down to individual families.

Notre Dame, Penn, UNC Chapel Hill have already closed down in person, on campus classes. UNC's infection rate was stated by them as going from 3 to about 13% in a week. It is hard to see this not happening to many schools unless they mandate certain mitigation steps.

I thought it was weird and somewhat, I dont know, really self-serving when Nick Saban pleaded with Bama students to wear masks if they wanted to have football.

Hey Nick you dumbass how about the students wear masks so they do not get infected period.

This was a good and important article, Rob. While all the attention this week will be on the relatively small group of parents who are upset and pushing for a meeting with the BTen Commish, I'm not at all convinced they represent a majority of parents of players on Iowa's 85-man scholarship roster. A majority of players on Iowa's roster were never going to see meaningful minutes in any games in 2020 anyway -- how do you think they and their parents feel about risking their health for this season? This was a very important article to point out there are differences of opinion even among players and parents who WERE going to play this fall. I do think the continued carping about the failure of BTen leadership is a bit overstated. Yes, they need to be more transparent. But just because they're not being transparent doesn't mean it's the wrong decision.

I get your point, but I am amazed and stunned at the resistance to such a simple act of humanity of wearing a mask in public to protect yourself, your loved ones, and your fellow humans. Especially in Southern Red states that have been much more resistant to this concept, if it takes people thinking selfishly about wanting football to do the right thing for society, then I say fire every bullet in the gun. I don't care why people decide to finally put on a mask, I just want the damn mask on every person I see.

I guess we saw it different. My thought was college age kids are invincible and have the mentality that they'll never come down with it and if they do it won't be anything more than a cold, so I really don't see them wearing masks because I simply don't think the majority care whether or not they get sick. I think you throw in the idea that there won't be a football season unless the spread gets under control and suddenly there's that "oh shit...this may actually affect me" moment.
