Howe: Outback Bowl a Textbook Hawkeye Victory

I think using the word 'textbook' fits too. We put up 27 pts on that defense in 3 quarters. Yet had 199 yards of total offense with as you mentioned negative yards rushing. We converted 1 of 11 3rd downs. It took our D doing their part. It took BF almost inexpicably calling running plays over and over which set up Easleys big 75 yarder. It took Iowa playing penalty free football. (One of the biggest plays I haven't seen talked about much was when MSU was called for holding ANelson at the end of the 1st half. If not for that they'd have had a first and goal) All that hidden yardage from some of the penalties they had. It took a crazy bounce of the ball from their WR dropping a sure go ahead TD with about 8 mins to go to fall into Gervases hands. You talk about a 'Team win'. That was most certainly that.

I'm not sure Kirk would call -15 yards rushing "textbook Iowa". But they found a way to win with great heart.

he said football is a funny game and it is about finding a way to win. We won BT title in 04 when we had a terrible running game due to injuries but we won.

I thought it was quite ironic the only team seeming to have a problem with the heat and humidity was MS. I believe one of them had to get an IV during the game.

Yeah, I thought that was odd as well. Here they are a southern state having problems with the heat while Iowa didn't have the same issues even though they were wearing black (BTW, who made that call?).

I would imagine he probably wasn't too happy about the rushing production. Very unKirk like type of performance.

But a lot of other things were very vintage Kirk. Very physical defense, hit a couple FGs, take advantage when your defense gives you good field position, bend but don't break, take advantage opponents mistakes, get outgained on the field but not on the scoreboard.

I needed an IV after shooting photos on the field all game. Got dehydrated. But I guess it's better that you guys, who were freezing your asses off in Iowa. :)

Iowa hasn't run the ball consistently for the last two seasons. That needs to be better next season if this offense is going to click.
