Howe: Iowa Football Looks Unified, Now Must Clean Up Fundamentals

Not sure HN would want me posting it externally. I can ask. Hopefully the site is back up soon. We have a game story from John Bohnenkamp and notes from Anna Kayser published on the back end that should show up with my column when HN is live again.

And, no, I don't know what's going on. ;)

Agree about basics, but one thing really bothered me. Iowa running backs and receivers were running out of bounds before first contact on many occasions, leaving 4 to 5 yards on the ground. What is this, a new philosophy? Purdue running backs and receivers on the other hand was literally fighting for ever inch. Seems like they wanted it more. Oh, by the way when Kirk leaves after this year Diacco better be on a our very short list of head coaches. I know we might have to make a minority hire, but man this guy has Iowa ties and can he ever coach.

Diaco is Harbaugh light. He has all the crazy (or more) and not as much success.

Bob Diaco’s interviews and pressers are like watching a guy 12 hours into an acid trip with low oxygen levels.

Hard pass...

Watched Petras’s demeanor/mannerisms after the game, you could tell he was pissed. It showed me he is a hyper-competitive dude, which I like. That being said I don’t know how that translates into improving his accuracy issues.

Rob, do you know if anyone at HN (or elsewhere in the media) has put together a snap chart? Just curious what the rotation looked like out there. I thought we would see more bodies on the OL - might have helped in the 4Q.

I haven't been able to open the article, but yesterday's game was very similar to last year's Purdue game. Breaks just went against the Hawks any of their own making). Most concerning long-term issue was inability to stop the run in the second half, which I think was the difference in the result. As well as Bell played, the Purdue QB had another INT in him if the Hawks could have forced more 2nd/3rd and longs.

Positives: Nixon, LaPorta, CB play (Moss and Hankins were good - safeties were not), special teams (Jones and Taylor are nice additions to a group which was already high-caliber), Petras' arm strength, Goodson from the wildcat

All eight games sans MSU will be close.

I've never seen an Iowa snap chart, but @ HawkeyeGameFilm on Twitter does a really thorough job on X/O analysis.
