Rob, you touched on some important realities. You don't have to run the ball to set up the run. It is perfectly legal to pass the ball to set up the run. Utilize the talent you have and maximize their abilities; exploit their abilities. Does it matter how you gain yardage, run or pass? We need to quit trying to gain yards in a specific way; and just gain yards by out flanking the defense (run or pass). If we're going to insist on being a run dominant mentality, then we need a different run offense. Go get a dual threat qb and use all of your rb's.
But, right now, we've got a qb that is (will soon be; he's still learning) legit and the offense needs to go through his right arm. We do have talent at WR and, yes, we still see too many drops. But, Matt Quarrels hasn't dropped any passes; though, he hasn't played yet. Why? Brandon Smith hasn't dropped any passes, but he plays rarely. Why? Stanley hit on a long pass to MVB. That's great. But why wasn't that ISM on the go route? MVB was caught from behind. And, as you point out, why only one shot down field?
The fanatical reliance on zone blocking, run the ball into 8+ man fronts "because we're Iowa and we're OL university" is prideful. I don't care how we score, just score. Throw it or run it, I don't care. But here's a hint; learn to do what the defense isn't expecting and exploit their weakness(es). Become unpredictable. It just might be easier to score.
