Howe: Are the Hawkeyes Ready for Primetime?

It hasn't been a work of art, but Iowa finds itself at 3-0 heading into next week's showdown with Penn State. The Hawkeyes ground out another victory Saturday against pesky North Texas:

The good news is that Penn State plays a more relatable offense. Happy to be done with the spread and air raid BS

The bad news is Penn State looks unstoppable right now

right now they are not. Defensive lapses are a problem and the OL run blocking is HIGHLY disappointing this season.

PSUs QB is about as bad of a matchup for Iowa's defense that can happen. He can run and throw well. As Rob stated, we're about ready to see if this Iowa team is ready for prime time

It seems to me that as much as Iowa seems to inexplicably play down to opponents that another team may blow out, we also seem to be able to rise up against better teams. Go Hawks!

PSU reminds me of 85 Iowa with Harmon and Long. You may be able to stop one of them, but not both.

I say we just forfeit. Iowa has no history of beating highly ranked opponents at Kinnick when we appear to be badly out-manned. Penn State is unbeatable, unstoppable and also have a total a-hole as a head coach. It will be too much to ask our poor little Hawkeye team to overcome. White flag, surrender now while we still have some healthy players left.

As I wrote in the column, we don't know what we have in these Hawkeyes. There certainly are a lot of things to like. There are a lot of things to clean up, however. We must much, much cleaner next week.

Is Jewell hurt? His closing speed was noticeably slower yesterday. He always takes the perfect angle but yesterday he was too slow for the angles he took.

He talked about it with us after the game. You can see it in the video I posted. In short, he says he's fine and that after the first game of the season, nobody is 100 percent. But, I think you're right. He's not right.

This game just comes at the wrong part of the season. It would be nice if Iowa could push it back a month.

I am still targeting the OSU game as the one to get.

Psu is gonna be a reality check. This team just isn't that good.

I'm sure that will be the national (and somewhat regional and local) narrative for the week. But nobody had the Hawkeyes beating Michigan last year, Penn State in '08, etc. We just don't know.

Thanks. I hope he gets back to 100% soon.

He got dinged up in the 3rd qtr. of the ISU game and hasn't been right since.
