How Rare are Victories over Teams Ranked in the Top Ten?

For Iowa, quite rare.

I researched College Football Reference and reviewed the past 41 seasons (20 under Hayden and 21 under Ferentz). That is approximately 500 games.

Hayden had 8 wins over Top 10 teams and Ferentz has captured 10 wins. That's 18 wins in total.

The win over #8 Minnesota this fall was one of those wins.

some other stats over 41 seasons:

Iowa's record against ranked teams: 44-91-1 ((.327)
Iowa's record against Top 10 ranked teams: 18-49-1 (.272)

Top 10 games in Kinnick over the past 41 seasons also are very rare. There have only been 31 of them.

Iowa's record is 11-20. Not bad.

Kirk is 7-9 in those games, including wins in 2016, 2017 and 2019.

Clemson was the same type of middling program that Iowa was for decades before Dabo's resurgence.

Draw a 150 mile circle around Clemson and determine the number of 4* and 5* players in that area...which includes Atlanta, Charlotte, Columbia, etc. There's your difference. Plus, now that he's put it on the map...he's getting anyone in the South he wants.

I love it that someone brought this up. Same with USC, Notre Dame, and Alabama. What made the difference? Hiring the right coach.

We can also throw Nebraska in there now that they are playing IN A REAL CONFERENCE.

Not going to lie though. Nebraska is proof of what can happen when a good coach retires and the University goes after the next hottest coach. So yes, I totally understand those who support keeping a stable coach in Iowa City.

It is also true that at times it’s the risk takers who get the biggest gains. Throwing in corruption along with buying players or the player’s parents can also help.

It’s called airplanes and aggressive recruiters. Even more important is playing a style of offense that will attract top recruits and not put them to sleep.

By the way what was around Nebraska back in the 70’s and 80’s?

I do agree with you on the “if you build it they will come” thinking. I think twenty years proves we’re not building it.

Steroids and Tom Osbourne. Also, FAR fewer recruiting restrictions, such as no roster limits, larger camp rosters, and fewer FCS/JUCO/DII/DIII schools pulling away those walkon gems.

If it's as simple as aggressive offenses and airplanes, why isn't Minny and Nebby pulling in top classes? Hell, the ONLY thing the latter gas going for them is "muh tradishun".

People talk about improving recruiting as if it's like herding cattle. There is a human element to all this stuff. It is NEVER that simple.
