How is Hawkeye basketball perceived nationally?

Winning 18-21 games is all well and good... Gotta show up in March too. That's the biggest thing. I don't see Iowa having a "star" on this team.
Uthoff has the most skills of anyone but I don't see him having the killer instinct and just absolutely bringing it every game to get himself respected much more then being a just a good player with skills. I hope he proves me wrong. If he can go for 14-16 per and blow up a few times along with stuffing the stat sheet in other ways he could get some national pub. He seems too unselfish and hesitant when he has a mismatch on him sometimes for me to think he will. But I look forward to seeing him play tonight. I think this team goes as he does more so then White.

Iowa hasnt done anything in hoops for over a decade. I dont count NITs, they dont mean anything. How would one think Iowa would be perceived at this point nationally? Make a few tournament runs, than write that article.

We know relatively little about Uthoff in terms of how he handles being "the guy." Nor Jok for that matter. We still have ceiling room, which is a real positive, and something not to be overlooked.

Lets hope there's no more falling beams at MSG.

Agreed. The NIT run a couple years ago was fun, but you can bet that most people outside the state of Iowa weren't paying attention. Myself, I couldn't tell you who wins the NIT from year to year. No one cares, to be blunt.

I doubt very many more people paid much mind to our "first round" NCAA appearance last year, either. Most people still view them as play in games.

Iowa hasn't won an NCAA game since 2001.

They were a 3 seed in 2006, which was great... But lost in the first round. Follow that with a string of terrible years, and leads us pretty much to where we are now. Iowa hoops is still an afterthought nationally, if even that.

I'm more interested in what recruits think of us than media and casual fans. Right now it's gotta be a pretty good sell that we are at the top of the best conference in the nation in scoring. Kids being recruited now don't even remember the Lick years already. It definitely would have helped to not tank last year but if we get a decent seed this year, the days of Iowa sucking will be long gone as far as 16 year old kids are concerned.

I agree with you, but national perception has to play into recruiting to a pretty fair degree, mainly for out of state recruits. The media has a lot of power. If we're perceived as a strong hoops program, chances are, recruits will notice that. If not, how likely is it that some kid from Ohio has "Iowa" flashing in bright black and gold letters on his radar? True, Fran still has to be able to sell the program but it sure doesn't hurt to have a good reputation.

I don't disagree with what you say but look at teams like Wisconsin. They are one of the top programs around (as far as wins go over the last decade) and they sure aren't stealing any blue chips anytime soon. It takes a lot to transform a program into what people consider a national powerhouse. Those schools will always get the one and done's for the most part.

The good news for everyone else is they can compete with those schools by getting the best of what's left and keeping them for 4 years. We aren't there yet obviously but with the style Fran plays and with his ability to find talent early, I think it will take a lot less winning then Wisconsin has done to surpass their recruiting.
