How 'bout them Yanks, Grape?

I'm talking about the US Men's National Soccer Team of course. Great match tonight against Honduras. Total domination by the team wearing red, white and blue allowed Klinsmann to pull his forwards leading 3-1 at around the 70th minute. (I'm too lazy to look up the box score to see when Donovan and Johnson exited.)

I really like what Klinsmann has brought to this team. I don't remember a US team that plays individual defense as well as this one does. (Team defense needed some work earlier but that really is coming along.) These US players also seem to do a much better job of individually gaining and keeping possession of the ball. Even Beasely is not the liability he was on defense in earlier games.

I don't fault Klinsmann for getting upset at the lack of some calls towards the end of the game and getting tossed. Honestly, I thought this match was a little over the head of the referee. He made several errors, and they were not just a question of judgment. (Eg: he was totally out of position to see the hold and push on the American attacker late in the game -- should have been a US penalty kick.) Still, a good win tonight.

So do you have a preference who the US plays in the Gold Cup final Sunday afternoon in Chicago? Watching Panama-Mexico as I write this and Panama is up 2-1 in the 68th minute. Personally I would prefer Mexico. This is not a good Mexico team and I think the US matches up much better in terms of speed, size and physicality with Mexico than Panama. Panama has some big players and they are fast. Not particularly good on offense but they get shots. Either way, though, I think the US wins.

On a side note, what's your reaction to the large Central American contingents that have attended the last two US matches? It's almost as if the US is playing an "away" game on US soil. I'm wondering if the opponent representation would be as large if the ticket site announced that ICE agents would be present and checking IDs?

Yeah, buddy! We look like world beaters out there.

I'm not sure Panama isn't a worse draw for us than Mexico. Mexico's been playing horribly for six months and Panama's been playing great. Don't expect Sunday to be a cakewalk.

If there's one silver lining, I think that we'll definitely play in front of a pro-US crowd in Chicago.

And, LawVHawk, to answer your question about foreign crowds, I think it's great. We're consistently bringing 20,000-30,000 of our own, which is miles beyond what we did even two years ago. Having foreign contigents creates a phenomenal atmosphere and adds credibility to the tournament - it's no different than when Spain hosted the Euro and was inundated by English and German fans.

Also, with MLS as the top-flight league for all of these countries but Mexico, having those fans come out and cheer their players on (the best of whom play in MLS) bodes well for the league. I think it's great and it should be embraced...it's not like our fans aren't showing up.

I guess on the whole the infusion of fans native or at least partisan to foreign teams playing the US is a good thing. It does add to the excitement and the environment, and if US soccer fans dont like it they can go online and compete for tickets just like non-US fans. It is frustrating, though, to see that in some stadiums there are far more fans for non-US teams than for the Americans, and also to see those fans toss soda, bottles or other items at US players in US stadiums. That shouldn't happen anywhere but let's try to elevate the game and crowd behavior above what you might find in lower tier games in Mexico or Central or South America.

Man you lured me in thinkg this was about baseball and its just a ball chasing thread. Please move to off topic mods.

Grape, meant to add I totally agree about Panama being a tougher draw, as I explained originally. This will not be an easy match.

Sorry to disappoint. I'm sure if you flip around the dial, though, you can find some three and a half hour baseball game that ends 1-0. By then Grape and I will be off doing something more relevant in our lives.

Don't feed the troll.

Congratulations on the 1-0 win against Panama at home. This in an off-year tournament filled with mega-powers like Cuba and Martinique. Congratulations, this must be what the "next level" feels like. The announcers tease us with claims that Klinsman "has the keys to the house at a higher level", but its still just a one goal win over Panama.

I am just not buying all the leaks from the Biogenesis investigation. Does anyone doubt that these are coming from a Commissioners office with a clear agenda and personal vendetta against certain players? We get it, you don't like A-Rod or R-Braun. That isn't a reason to blackmail them into accepting suspensions without showing all your cards first. This is all just covering your backside for mistakes made a decade ago, current stars paying the price. Why not have a decade late suspension for the nineties guys while your office is at it.

a) No one said that we're Spain. But a ten game win streak on the international level - no matter what confederation you play in - is big time. Teams like Argentina and Brazil routinely get knocked off or tied by weak countries - and there are plenty - in CONMEBOL. Not only have we not lost to any in ten games, we haven't even tied any.

b) I'll take 1-0 over Panama any day of the week. They're going to the World Cup, and they're going to be a tough out.

c) The fact that you're talking about the actual Yankees in this thread goes to show how sound your judgement is. Or isn't.

I understand they have reached a level where an opponent will play 11 behind the ball and tackle nfl style for ninety minutes. Its what Team USA did when Bora Mulitinovic was head coach. I get it, they are playing with confidence and finishing off games and going forward late. But Concacaf isn't the highest level and the only other good team is in a down time and disorganized with helpless infighting.

I think its clear from some of the leaks over the Sorriano trade that Cashman hasn't been in control of the Yankees for a while now. Who really wanted this guy? Its like the people above the GM don't think he is spending money fast enough, and they want the cheaper non-suspended aging slugger while their other guy is suspended. They wouldn't have made this deal ten years ago, in fact they did the opposite.

Yeah, you do get it. So remind me...why shouldn't I be excited?

...and I think the 'Bombers will turn around once Tino and Paul O'Neil find their groove. Bernie's obviously settling into the three spot, and with Jeter's OBP at the two spot, one of those guys has to drive in some runs. But with Stanton and Rivera in the 'pen all they really need to do is get a lead and hold it. Good problems!
