okay peeps. need some constructive input. a few of you really helped out with this, especially big thanks to wundergrape. here's the rough draft for the HN march madness. 4 regions. 8 players in each region. if you think someone should be added, you better back it up and have a guy to cut. i added stats for the last two regions as per their last year with the Hawks for comparison reasons. Seeds are not set yet, so give me some input on that too.

Old Timers (Harrison/O'Connor/Miller) Region (pre 1974)

1. John Johnson
2. Sam Williams
3. Herb Wilkinson
4. Don Nelson
5. Dick Ives
6. Murray Weir
7. Downtown Freddy Brown
8. Kevin Kunnert

Olson/Raveling Region (1974-1986)

1. Ronnie Lester
2. Greg Stokes
3. Bruce Sky King
4. Bob Hansen
5. Kevin Boyle
6. Kenny Arnold
7. Vince Brookins
8. Steve Carfino

Davis Region (1986-1999)

1 Roy Marble 20.5/5.6/2.2/0.1/1.5 (2116 career pts)

2 BJ Armstrong 18.6/2.5/5.4/0.2/1.8 (shot 44% from 3 for his career at Iowa)

3 Ed Horton 18.3/10.6/2.1/0.4/0.9
4 Acie Earl 16.9/8.9/1.3/2.5/1.3 (avg 4.0 blk per game his junior year)
5 Andre Woolridge 20.2/2.7/6.1/0.2/1.4
6 Brad Lohaus 11.3/7.7/1.8/1.1/0.5
7 Ryan Bowen 14.4/8.7/1.5/1.3/2.5
8 Chris Street 14.5/9.5/1.3/0.9/0.6

Alford/Lick/McCaffery Region (1999-2013)

1 Pierce 17.8/5.2/4.2/0.5/2.5
2 Brunner 14.1/9.2/1.8/0.6/1.0
3 Horner 13.6/4.1/5.6/0.1/1.4 (pretty much averaged this his soph-senior seasons)
4 Haluska 20.5/4.6/2.6/0.3/1.4
5 Oliver 14.9/2.8/4.8/0.1/1.4
6 Recker 17.1/3.4/2.5/0.4/1.6
7 Evans
15.4/11.1/1.3/0.5/1.6
8 Gatens 15.2/3.6/2.0/0.2/1.1

stats are listed as ppg/reb/asst/blk/steals

Jess Settles should be included due to his 13 year career at Iowa.

But who do you bump, Street? Had he graduated in the Alford years he would have easily made the top 8. The Davis region has former NBA players that did not make the bracket (Jepsen and Davis).

Meat, the more I think about this the more I have a hard time keeping Ricky Davis off the Davis list. I know he only played 1 year but in terms of talent he is probably the 2nd best player on that list after Marble. I would bump Bowen and keep Street for the same reasons.

Reggie Evans is seeded to low, 2nd best player after Pierce IMO.

hummm, good points. does longevity bump one year of greatness?

tempted to bump Lohaus for Ricky Davis. any thoughts? Bowen was just good at everything, and i think he deserves to be on there.

interesting that we can have a long thread of disliked Hawks, but very few contributers for favorite Hawks.

Hoping this doesn't make you mad but you need to completely re-think your rough draft. What's the point of four separate "regionals" when they are 4 "time periods"?

The era in which they played shouldn't matter.

Even assuming you are only considering the college careers of these Hawkeyes there is no doubt the quartet of Nelson, Johnson, Brown, and Kunnert are all top 4 seeds, especially based on their NBA careers (50 or more years combined and 5 or 6 NBA championships?)

Time to go back to the drawing board although you got a great idea that really promotes thought and discussion.

if jon or spank wants to take on the project and re-seed the whole lot of them, they can give it a shot. but, in all honesty, i think it is only fair to compare the era's individually. the game has changed quite a bit at different times, and that makes it almost impossible IMO to rank them all in one group. i figured eras would make for better brackets than just some random criteria.

I don't get it. The best player Iowa has ever had and will ever have was Ronnie Lester so a fake tournament to determine that is pointless.

Whar Kingsbury??? Would've been all-time 3-pt leader had he played his senior year.

Chris was a selfish, arrogant lazy individual during his days at Iowa (he has admitted it several times).

He also got into fights on the court and then thought he could play in the NBA... not a single day, yet alone 10 day contract.

Kingsbury should never be included in any conversation of all time greats except that he was a McDonald's All American and wasted it.

Hey Chris.. try playing D once in awhile and enjoy life as a small time banker...

Can someone ban this guy, please? Chris Kingsbury had a lot going for him when he was a young man. He made mistakes. He owned up to them. He has a family and is a productive member of society. I bet you didn't do a single stupid thing when you were 20 or 21. I bet you were a total blast to hang out with, the kind of dude who would grow up to bash a guy who played at Iowa almost 20 freaking years ago.

Has he really? Please post link.....kthnksbai

kingsbury was probably my favorite player growing up, but his junior season was (at least statistically) significantly worse than his fantastic sophomore year. he single handedly won a good portion of games, but he also missed a ton of 3's. i can't believe that Tom Davis kept all his hair having him on the roster. dude had a killer instinct and will always have a following.

i read an awesome (and super long) interview with Gottlieb talking about Kingsbury and college ball somewhere. will post it if i can find it.

please lets not go down the bash former players road. that was a long time ago.

He played with an injury most of the season that not everyone knew about.
