HN basketball player tournament

Since it looks like we won't be dancing (NCAA style), barring any major surprises, lets have some fun. Here's what I'm thinking. Lets do our favorite Iowa b-ball players over the course of the different coaching eras. We could have the brackets divided up like this

Pre-Olson (O'Connor, Miller, etc)

Olson/Raveling 74-86

Davis 86-99

Alford/Lick/Fran 99-2013

So, please nominate your favorite players from each of these era's, and while there will be some overlap of players, we'll generally stick with which coach they graduated with. An example would be BJ Armstrong in the Davis group even though Raveling is who brought him in.

Will try and roll out the bracket as we get closer to the tournament. Will also try and have a large field if we have enough players nominated. Thanks for your cooperation.

Certainly not old enough to have seen any of the pre olsen players, but my college coach should be on the list with Nelson. Dave Gunther.

pick as many as you like! i'm hoping to have a 64 player field. i just listed my favorites.

Well you said favorite players , not best players , but I will put some names out there as best players besides the ones already mentioned:

Miller - George Peeples, Sam Williams (silky smooth guard/small forward), John Johnson, Freddy Brown could light it up and was quick on Dee.

Lute - Bruce Sky King was strong rebounder and scorer, Scott Thompson a very good shooter and you could go with Vince Brookins as scorer and Steve Special K Krafcisin as big man.
 


Lute - Steve Carfino, Michael Payne
Davis - Brad Lohaus, Roy Marble, BJ Armstrong, Matt Bullard, Russ Millard, BART CASEY!
Alford/Lick/Fran - Mike Gesell, Aaron White, Dean Oliver, Jess Settles, Jeff Horner
 


favorite/best - kind of goes hand in hand to a certain extent. there will always be folks like Kingsbury who are crowd/fan favorites but not the (arguably) best player on the team.

acie earl, chris street, woolridge, koch, horner, haluska, gatens, etc those are givens for the most part. for example, it will be interesting to see if there are enough doug thomas fans to edge him into the bracket. i just know if i put this together without input i'll miss someone, so wanted to get this out there early enough to have some time.

Ok the guys in bold are good and will get better but how about Andre Woolridge from a Mr. Davis team and a Hluska and Brunner from Alford team, along with reggie evans

Quick thoughts:

If you've got Jaryd Cole and Jared Riner on there, you've got to have Melsahn.

I'd put Tony Freeman in ahead of either Chauncey Leslie or Brody Boyd.
 


In fact, a pretty good case can be made that Reiner should be substituted with Glen Worley and Cole should be substituted with Basabe.

I feel more strongly that Worley's the better player than Reiner, but if you're trying to balance out positions, then Reiner stays.

In general, though, it looks good.
