My god, Coach Barnes had I believe a 402 & 180 win loss record as the Longhorn head coach & a record of making the Ncaa tournament in 14 of the last 16 yrs. yet the powers that be at the University of Texas show Barnes the door! Makes ya sick! Talk about what have ya done for me lately!

17 seasons is a long time at 1 school. UT hoops has been pretty stale the last couple seasons and they underperformed, this season. Again, after 17 seasons, I guess I can understand UT feeling that a change was needed.
 
Barnes is an awesome recruiter but he really sucks at the X's and O's. If they can land Smart or Marshall it will be a step up.
 
They haven't reached the sweet 16 since 2008. With the level of talent they've had that's some serious underperforming.
 
I'm not totally sure where I stand on this. Rick Barnes made TX a competitive program and it's a shame to see him shown the door, but at the same time, he should be producing a lot more with the talent he's brought in. Then again - the next guy may not be able to bring in the same kind of talent, either. So who knows how this will end for Texas. The grass isn't always greener on the other side of the fence, as Iowa fans know full well.

Barnes is a terrific recruiter, but mediocre game coach who does less with more. Maybe he just needed different assistants? That said, maybe it's some of his assistants responsible for bringing in a lot of that talent.. I don't really know.

His coaching record is pretty good but NCAA tourney performances are lacking. That sounds like every other coach in the Big 12..

This. Texas has had too much talent for the 2008 Sweet Sixteen to be the program's most recent highlight.
 
Reading the TX Scout site, it sounds like the AD is focusing on Smart, the possibly Jay Wright. The article made it sound like Marshall is not a good fit from a personality stand point.
 
But the big 12 teams only care about how well they do during the season. The NCAA tourney doesn't mean anything. LOL

Which is why the Big 12 teams are laughing at the miserable failure of a season Michigan State has had this year. Izzo should be fired.

Jay Wright hasn't exactly been lighting it up in the NCAA Tournament, either, despite great regular seasons. It's been since 2009 since he's made it to the Sweet 16 or beyond (Final Four in 2009). I'd still take the guy in a heartbeat, though.

New AD is why he was fired.... They just look for reasons to get rid of previous people and clean house so they can get their own in. He's gotten rid of Brown and Barnes within a short period of time and even thought the Barnes firing was a surprise to some it really shouldn't be....

I thought it was time for TD to go. I knew the entire story and others outside the program didn't. Who Iowa hired to replace him had nothing to do with whether he should have been let go or not.

Texas is in the same boat, in a way. Sure, his overall record and length of time was better and longer. But, at the end of the day, as others have pointed out, he underperformed in the NCAA Tournament for years with the money and talent that he had to work with.

Yes he had a new AD. But that doesn't change anything I just said. I wouldn't presume to tell them they shouldn't have higher expectations than what they have gotten lately under him.
