Hewitt out at GT

Not surprising - I don't think I've ever seen a coach do so little with so much talent. IMO - Hewitt would be a fantastic hire if someone wants to add an assistant that can recruit up a storm..

I know that there have been rumors and talk that Tubby is going to get an extension at Minnesota, but I would not be surprised at all to see him at Tech.

Yeah, that is too bad... he seems to be one heck of a good coach/person. There might be more to this than W-L though. I mean he is surrounded by great athletes in GA and can't bring them in. If I were a great coach and lacked the ability to recruit I would focus on surrounding myself with people on my staff who could recruit well. Who knows what was said or done internally as well.
One thing is certain about coaching jobs... there are always available openings! Some other team will certainly jump on board with hiring Hewitt.

That has a little touch of irony to it. He had a chance to take the St. John's gig last season but said loyalty was keeping him at Tech. A year later he is gone.
The current rumor here in Georgia is that St Johns cooled on Hewitt and he was never offered the job. Don't feel sorry for Hewitt though - he will be getting a humongous buyout check.

GA Tech's top recruit, 6'9'' forward Julian Royal (rivals 4 star) has said he would re-open his recruiting if Hewitt was fired. Might be worth Fran looking into. He did not play particularly well in the state tourney, but he's one of those guys who supposedly did very well on the AAU circuit.

We have a Paul Hewitt thread, but no Keno thread. 11 am central time and no thread.

The ATL is great locale to recruit to, I thought PH would take GT back to the Bobby Cremins days.

FCAS: you obviously are in Georgia and know the HS bb scene there.
Did Meyer play in the state tourny this weekend...if so,how did he look?

If Meyer does commit to Iowa, do you think Iowa might be able to get in on other Celtics down the line?

You think Tubby is in play down there? This power move by Tubby at Minny might be predicated on forcing Minny to commit to him or he bails back to his native Georgia?

Love to see Iowa get involved down in Atlanta AAU bb scene...maybe grab the next Dwight Howard?:)

Good stuff.

Dude, are you freaking kidding me? He has recruited NBA players Jarret Jack, Chris Bosh, Derrick Favors, Gani Lawal, and there is a good chance that Shumpert will play in the bigs as well. Good post though as recruiting is obviously his biggest bugaboo.

Check yesterdays threads as he was fired yesterday. I believe there are 3 or 4 that were dedicated to Keno and his inability to coach.

I am in the ATL area but unfortunately I don't have much time to follow HS basketball too closely. Frankly, I only watched some of the tournament this year because of Iowa going after Meyer. I have not seen Meyer play, however. Over the past few years I try to catch a few games each year. The players have freakish athletic ability but I don't think they are as well coached as in the Midwest.

Don't know, but I think it would be very tough. The SEC and ACC powerhouses hit ATL pretty hard, and now Fox is reviving the Georgia program. I think if Fran has success recruiting down here, it would be in finding sleepers - guys who might be overlooked because they are on deep teams.

I think Tubby to GA Tech is a long shot. First, due to Hewitt's large buyout, they may not be able to afford someone at Tubby's level. Secondly, the program is in really bad shape right now, the fans are very apathetic. Their attendance is pitiful. Plus, next year they will be playing their games off campus. The new coach has a huge rebuilding challenge and I wonder if Tubby has the energy for that.

I'm thinking they will go with a mid-major coach or an assistant with significant experience. Given that the fans down here are longing for a return to the Cremins days, I'll throw out a name out of the blue: Craig Neal.

Yeah, my bad, should have took a minute or two to check previous threads. Not on this website every minute of everyday so things get by me.;)
