Hesse to MLB?

Saw Parker Hesse played some at the MLB spot vs. NIU. It brings up an interesting possibility especially if MLB position isnt as settled as earlier thought. What makes this interesting is that this would free up AJ Epenesa to start at DE since it looks like when our DT’s return, that would free up Brincks and Gohlston to backup DE spots. Gohlston played well against NIU and could be coming on. Lattimore, Reiff and Linderbaum in DT rotation. Would anyone be able to run up the middle on us? Niemann and Welch looked solid at the OLB spots. How bout this as a lineup?

DE A.Nelson.
Gohlston
DT M. Nelson
Linderbaum
DT Lattimore
Reiff
DE Epenesa or
Brincks
OLB Welch
Colbert
MLB Hesse
A.Jones or Hockaday
OLB Niemann
Wade

Hesse is athletic enough to play inside tackle to tackle. Tall enough to knock down passes over the middle. Can you imagine a rb trying to run a lead block thru him?

At what point in the game did you see Hesse at MLB? Your eyes may have been deceiving you... He was at DE and DT all game long.

@Hawkfnntn is right, plenty of DT and DE, but no LB. I did notice AJE drop into coverage a couple of times from their Raider look, so perhaps Hesse did a time or two as well.

I thought Hesse looked very Mitch King like at DT, super quick and disruptive. He gets off blocks so well in the run game. It will be interesting to see if he plays at all inside on normal downs with Lattimore and Reiff coming back, or if it is only in obvious passing situations.

I like that they moved Hesse up and down the LOS. He was all over the place yesterday, very disruptive.

King played on the inside at 265lbs. Klug played college and pro at 270 lbs. Same sorta attributes using leverage and quickness to their advantage. My goodness this D-line is deep. You have Lattimore/Reiff chomping at the bit ready to play and if you get the same play you got from Hesse yesterday, he will be hard to keep off the field.

Get the MLB situation straightened out and this could be a really good defense.

It was sometime in the first half after Jones was pulled. Chuck Long mentioned it during the broadcast. But then again I can see if he could of mistakened Hesse’ no. for Hockaday’s. Maybe I too fell victim to his suggestion, since Im over 60 and cant see as well as I used to. But when he said that, it sure looked like it at the time. I’ll have to rewatch the game again, I have it recorded. But even if he didnt, it still is a intriguing idea. Lol!

After reviewing the tape, Hesse was lined up at the RDE spot. Hockaday was at MLB. Chuck Long commented that Hesse was lined up at MLB at the 11:18 mark in the second quarter. I can see how that led me to believe Hesse was at MLB. The new lettering on the unis do look a little different from a distance. I apologize, and I stand corrected. Damn you Chuck Long! Lol!

There was one play were Epenesa lined up on 3rd down at DE, but stood up. The NIU QB dropped back to pass and AJ dropped back into pass coverage almost like a LB .

I saw that play. I was glad to see the raider package again. I like the fact that PP is willing to try some new looks. Seems like the older PP gets, the more aggressively the packages are getting. Kudos to coach Parker!

Probably confused him and Hockaday, since the former wears 40 and the latter wears 48, which with the new numbers font could be easy to mix up.

I noticed that too. Wieting 39 and Hockenson 38 where very hard to tell apart and I kept thinking "who is number 8 on offense" while looking at ISM.

I do like the bigger numbers though. I wasn't a fan when Iowa had the smaller numbers a few years ago.

Hesse could be the MVP of the defensive line and I am not sure why he doesn't get more love. The leverage he plays with is awesome and he is very versatile with a good motor. I know everyone wants to get AJ into the game more but at this point he isn't at the same level for both the pass and the run as Hesse. Maybe that will change as the year goes on but regardless we are fortunate to be even having the conversation and we are in a good situation to have both.

I like the direction the program is heading. We just need to clean up a few things and this could be another magical season.
