Heretical View: Why not Parker as the next Head Coach?

I'm not sold on B. Ferentz. Someday perhaps; but he is still learning.

Why not promote Parker when Kirk retires? Is he too old? He is a wonderful coach.

I think you pay him $2 million a year to lock him up for 3 years as OC. Make him feel the love. Make the transition easier for the new guy. But he ain't a HC.

Couldn't handle job. Hawks would continue their no O ways.

What would happen if Ferentz had to take a leave of absence starting on Saturday and O'Keefe got interim HC duties and put up 52 points against an upper level SEC team? Do we fire Kurt on January 2?

Kirk will keep coaching a very long time, to add "wins" to his legacy and to make SURE that Brian will take over. Parker will be too old by then. My two cents...

Phil sees what KF puts up with and has to do on a daily basis and has said hard pass.

Set aside feelings about Ferentz for a moment. His job is not just on Saturdays. It includes:

Glad handing boosters and alumni

Press conferences and public speaking to local, conference, and national sports news

Practice planning (down to the minute, college practices are highly organized due to only being allowed a set amount of time)

Film sessions

Logistics for all team events (ie when and how they leave, where they go, what they do, how they do it)

Monitoring grades of 110+ athletes

Monitoring behavior of said athletes

Maintaining relationships of said athletes

Watching film and evaluating prospective athletes from next year, 2 years, 3, and sometimes even 4 years ahead

Recruiting THOSE athletes

THEN add game planning, offensive and defensive scheming, and game day responsibilities.

Phil Parker is in a coaching sweet spot where he has total control of his side of the ball, almost like a HC, but without the pressures and responsibilities of one. Not to mention he and Ferentz are obviously very loyal to each other.

Exactly

If Kirk retired today, the only logical choice, as far as internal candidates go, is Phil Parker

So kirk can't retire today. He will wait another 5 years and gradually give Brian more and more power, and when he finally retires, Phil will be too old by then.

Of course, it would kind of funny if Kirk retires after the 2019 bowl game and tells Brian, well I gave you a great opportunity and you blew it. I am going to reccomend that Phil takes over.

If Parker took the HC job, he'd have to dump Brian. That could likely mean losing many of the assistants currently on board if they feel loyal to KFz. There goes any continuity.

If he could pull it off, hiring a dynamic younger OC (likely priming him to take over as HC in 5-6 years) and still focus on the D (like Mike Zimmer with the Vikings) it could work.

Phil's not much younger than KFz. (8 years) so it would likely be a short stint.

Great DC no doubt but does this sound like a guy who really wants to be a head coach?

Especially when he said - "If somebody gave me the opportunity I'd take a swing at it".

Gave and take a swing at it are keywords that tells me he doesn't have "it" to be a good HMFIC.
