I'm not much of a conspiracy theorist but just listen to this scenario I thought of today when thinking about the hawks.

So we all know that iowa has had a touhh time in close games against ranked teams the past couple of years. Could it be that when Fran first got here from the little leagues that his sometimes abusive and always hilarious treatment of the officials have gotten him 'blacklisted' by the spoiled refs in the Big ten? Could this be why they've struggled in close games the last couple years? What about the chair slam and the B1G reprimand followed by a mysterious meeting at the coral rodge mall?

We felt like Iowa was screwed in the isu and villanova games. Will this trend continue because the refs are out for the Hawkeyes?

No, I don't think that at all...refs have only cost Iowa in one game since Fran got there and how can I forget Fran getting taken away by the cops?

Talking about UNI, no one said anything that they defeated VCU last night; I guess VCU was overrated in the preseason polls. Fran has mellowed since the first two-three years though.

We didn't get a lot of calls (big surprise on the road in a loud arena). But we were good enough to have the lead at the end, and it was our game to win. Just couldn't close the deal. That's about it.

Whitey gets a key rebound, then freezes and gets it stolen rather than throw it out front to either one of two unguarded ball handlers. If he does...likely ballgame.

Our best free throw shooter (Mike g) misses 3 in a row in the last minute. How often will that happen in a 4 year career.

We just didn't close.

We have some nice players, great skills. But we lack...a bad ***. And I don't see that type of player on Fran's radar. Woody (at this point) doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of making it in the NBA, he'll get pushed around like a leaf. And I love Whitey's skills...but he's soft too. Long and lean..ain't enough. You need some muscle. McCabe could beat both of them in the low post or the paint.

I think power, strength, whatever you want to call it, will always be our Achille's heel under Fran. Can Doyle work with the bball team too?

While I don't believe the refs cost Iowa the game against ISU I do believe refs develop perceptions of players and coaches. Particularly through early experience with them and therefore are a little quicker with the whistle on those players and coaches.

Look no further than McCabe and Woodbury. Both players had difficulty with foul trouble as FR. For the past 3 years with McCabe and the past 10 games with Woodbury, those guys can barely get off the scorers table without getting a foul called on them. Some of the calls I've seen against McCabe over the past few seasons have been laughable.

I think McCabe and Woody cause their own problems. They both create a lot of contact, and both do so hedging the screens up high for all the world to see. They also create a lot of contact down low as well. There is a reason they are always in foul trouble, but I don't think it is the refs perception of them.

Nailed it.

Iowa has loss more games because of poor coaching than poor officiating.....

I cant agree with this, sorry. I think Fran is a damn good coach. He puts them in a position to win and ultimately its player mental mistakes that cost the game in the waning moments. Hes got these guys playing a high level of ball, it just comes down them losing a bit of composure at the end.

Iowa has lost a lot of close games the last year and a half, but there are a lot of other things that have cost Iowa in these games besides the officiating: Missed FT's down the stretch, untimely turnovers, our opponents getting incredibly lucky bounces on game-tying 3's, Iowa' shooting 3-15 from 3, not putting the game away when you are up 10+ (long scoring droughts), etc.

Officiating is just something a lot of people like to blame when they lose a close game, but there are still a lot of things you could also have done better yourself to have won the game despite the refs.

No, Iowa did not lose last Saturday because of the refs.

When people say this is it just an exaggerated response to the "blame the ref" crowd or do they not believe the game was called one sided? Or do they not think that a game being called one sided has any baring on the outcome of the game?

I think Iowa state got the home town calls, the same thing we can expect when Iowa State comes to Carver next season. Iowa lost the game because they did not hit the shots and free throws they needed down the stretch in order to win the game.
