Hayden Fry's "Top 25" - #21

This game was anything but a tight, tough, last-second victory. Iowa won with a shut–out - and since their bowl that year was pretty much already determined, overall it seemed to be an inconsequential game. But two things happened that day – Tim Dwight set his all–time record at Iowa for punt returns for TD’s and proved himself to be one of THE most exciting athletes to ever step foot on the hallowed grounds of Kinnick Stadium. And while none of us knew it, and at the time, few of us would have believed it, sadly this was the final significant victory for one J. Hayden Fry at Iowa.

Are you going to make us look it up or are you going to tell us which game you are talking about. Guessing it was a game that Iowa win in 1997 but after that I am drawing a blank.

Edit: ok, I looked it up. You must be talking about Iowa's 31-0 victory over Minnesota in the last regular season game of 1997. My memory of the 1997 season is that Iowa had an awful FG kicker that cost Iowa at least 2 wins that year. Iowa had Tavian Banks, Tim Dwight, Jared Devries, yet they fizzled down the end. Guess I completely forgot the big win against Minny.

Sorry about that - no, I didn't mean to leave that detail out. But we lost our bowl game that year, and the three wins Fry won the next season were nothing to write home about. This really was his last significant win. And you are right - had we had a better field goal kicker that year, who knows if we would have been a much better team. That said, the guy we did have we knew was only good from about 35 yards and in - and yet we kept dragging him out there to make field goals in excess of 40 yards - it totally messed him up.
