NOVEMBER 22ND, 1986 - IOWA 30, (at) Minnesota 27: Winning on the road in the Big 10 is never easy – winning at Minnesota certainly wasn’t, as our loss that finished stomping on our championship hopes in 1984 showed. But this game represented the largest deficit halftime overcome by a Hayden Fry team (17 points) – and a win we desperately needed – we do not get to the Holiday Bowl without this win. As many of you know or have heard, it was all brought to fruition when Minnesota had 12 men on the field for a long field goal try at the end of the game that was missed by Rob Houghtlin. After the penalty, he made yet another game-winner, adding to his legacy.
After the game, as Hayden approached first-year Minnesota coach John Gutekunst to shake hands, a tall figure stepped in front of the Goofer coach and yelled at coach Fry, "I oughta clobber you for winning like that." To which Hayden replied to one Jesse "the Body" Ventura, "Well if you folks would learn how to count to 11, we could both save ourselves a lot of trouble." CLASSIC Hayden.
